Video: Yakuza Armed With Shotgun Faces Off Against Japanese Police

October 27th, 2007 by James

Here is a shocking video of a 1992 stand off between Japanese police and a shotgun-wielding gangster. The video was taken from the 4th floor of a nearby apartment building:

What is the most shocking thing about the video? I’d have to say that this guy is pointing a gun he can fire at any moment towards a group of police officers, and the police make no attempt to shoot him. Dare I suggest that it is justified and prudent for police to fire on a suspect in such a situation?

Indeed they are not, but why should criminals such as the one in the video be allowed to have a chance to kill police officers? They got lucky in this video, but what if the criminal had not missed, and actually killed a police officer?

I think it’s good that they don’t automatically shoot anyone holding a weapon…though they should have heavier shields and bullet-proof gear.

I’d say the Japanese legal system is bloodthirsty enough, and it’s a damn good thing the police won’t kill anyone unless they absolutely, absolutely have to. Besides, maybe the police were psychologically savvy enough to know that this guy didn’t really want to shoot anyone.

Let me begin by adding the obligatory response; that man isn’t Japanese, he’s a Korean with a Japanese name! My 2ch sources told me so, just like the guy that shot that mayor a while back.

Police in most other countries don’t fire automatically either. “Use of force”, look it up. Its what police are probably most criticized for. If they shot him and he turned out to be mentally unstable, or if dogbertt is correct and he is Korean, they’d get slammed for misconduct from every direction (cross-racial killing seems to be a hot topic). Maybe there was a better way to handle it, but it looked standard to me, try to talk him down, only use force if necessary etc. Shoot first, ask question only causes problems for police.

..and John O… good comment, but “bloodthirsty”? Bit much maybe, lol. I think my home country USA beats Japan on that one.
