Online Petition Against Fingerprinting Foreigners

Those of you who oppose the Japanese government’s new policy of fingerprinting all foreigners who enter Japan may be interested in signing an online petition set up by Kyoto-based French blogger Thomas:

I doubt that the Japanese government will give much weight to online petitions, but I don’t see any harm in taking a few seconds to fill out the petition entry form.

What’s the problem? Dont break the law and your fingerprints wont matter. You guys didnt think you were back home did you? If you arent used to being treated like a foreigner after the first week here you never will be.

  Did you ever think that this might actually hurt the economy? Only 1 out of the 18 nations engaged in ASEAN top-level diplomatic activities will be fingerprinting ALL foreigners (including permanent residents) from next month. Only one.

It’s interesting how many people fall into the “if you’re innocent you have nothing to worry about” mythos. And the issue is not about being treated as a foreigner but being treated as a potential criminal. I feel like a member of the NRA (Hmmm…Nonjapanese Residents Association perhaps?) saying that “foreigners don’t commit crimes, criminals commit crimes.”

Before you demand your right, learn how to live in Japan.
Halloween event is sooooo disturbing based on Japanese culture. Do not think people think it is OK to have stupid party because they don’t say anything. Japanese are typiclly quiet for your stupid act because they think you guys are harmful when you are selfishly having funa in subway. Do not think your culture and living standard is always correct.

  Read before you rant. This post has nothing to do with Halloween. And linking fingerprinting with that JR Halloween thing is a lame attempt at justification.

I am saying demanding something without following local rule of the society was just selfish as 5yrs old kids.

Did you know a lot of Japanese site laughing about your halloween event as “terrorist attack”? They are saying you guys are really “disturbing” others. And without straighten out your attitude, and you are asking to change the law because you don’t like it? Get life.

You are “foreigner”, you are just visiting the country.
Follow the rule before demanding anyhing. If you show the sincerelity for the local rule, people listen.

  Opposition to a new law of dubious effectiveness that makes life harder for resident foreigners is not the same as blatant flouting of existing laws in the name of partying. You also assume that those who do not like this new fingerprinting law are the same as those who will participate in this Halloween party. Not liking the law does not mean we will not obey it – there is a world of difference between the two.
  
  And who are you referring to when you say “your” Halloween event? Japan Probe? It’s not a Japan Probe event. All foreigners in Japan? Even more wrong. The organisers of this party? They’re not here.

Why don’t they fingerprint everyone? I’d be in favour of that.
What other countries fingerprint foriegners?
Why do they fingerprint foreigners again? Terrorists? Japanese people do not become terrorists.
How about exception for long term residents?
What message is this going to give and is a given anyway?
