I have been notified that the infamous Yamanote Halloween Train party will be occurring in Tokyo on the night of October 27th. Here are the details (via wikipedia):

The 2007 event is scheduled for Saturday, October 27, 2007. Festival-goers board the JR Yamanote Line at JR Shinjuku station, platform 13 (Yamanote bound for Ikebukuro). Japanese citizens as well as foreigners meet where car 10 stops, in front of the escalator from South exit. Everyone boards the 21:08 northbound train and loops around clockwise. Frequently everyone brings their own alcoholic beverages.

And a few videos of last year’s train, so you get the idea of what kind of event it is:

To some the Yamanote Halloween Train is a fantastic good time. Others view it as a shamefully rude display of public intoxication and a major annoyance to the Japanese passengers who unexpectedly encounter it. What are your opinions, probers?

Update 1:: Looks like this story has been picked up by 2channel and Japanese blogs, and many Japanese netizens are not happy!

注:このブロッグのコメントのなか、在日外国人からの賛同的な発言は極少数であり、一般の人が否定的な意見を表している。よって、「欧米人のモラルの低劣さ」ではなく、一部のみが問題を起こしていることを認識してもらいたい。

Update 2: There may be another Yamanote Halloween Train party tonight, as this conflicting announcement has been found on a German Yahoo group:

Although police might come in later to clear the wagons and make space for
those well-behaving, sober students and businessman normally filling late
night trains, don’t worry: Nobody will arrest you for drinking and singing
on a train – just keep your ticket!

This year’s train leaves from Ikebukuro station at 9.06 pm on Saturday
night, October 27th. Gather from 8.45 pm on platform #7/8 in JR’s Ikebukuro
station (the “outbound” trains in direction to Ueno) and just get on the
train when it arrives. Don’t be late! Come in costumes, bring your friends
and your own drinks – don’t count on those kiosks. And tell everybody else >
the more, the partier!
P.S. Note that this year’s starting location is Ikebukuro, not Shinjuku.

Most forums seem to have the Shinjuku information for the party, so those looking to join in or break up the party would probably be better off going to that one…

Dozens of 2-channelers have already claimed to have notified the police about this and told them to arrest the party participants. Here is the public information for the cops/Shinjuku station which has been posted all over several Japanese blogs:

When Hanshin Tigers won the baseball tournament, the fans had a big party in the train. It was frowned upon by general public.
This party could be joyful party symbolizing a great aspect of multi-culture;When gaijin and Japanese bikers rode in costume, they were accepted and welcomed.
Or it could be seen as a riot of fucked gaijin and fucked Japanese influenced by them, reinforcing xenophobia.

I think it depends on the manner and the time they act in the train. Power ranger, Jason, witches etc. will be welcome, but to be accepted, at least, no drinking, no smoking, no lying on the train. Tone-deaf singing makes it look worse. Quiet display will be better. And of course avoid the rush hour.

If they really want to have a beer party, they can have it on other place, like roppongi, or NY subway or somewhere else.

It would be piss-annoying if you couldn’t get on the train because of these guys. And would be horrible if they rowdy and drunk. Otherwise, it would probably cheer up my commute. Not too bad considering it’s a Saturday night though and most of the people riding would be going to party themselves or going home after a day of boring overtime work.

What the hell? I find this party utterly awesome and expected that most of you commenters share my opinion! Whats wrong with you guys?

This really looks like fun. Maybe its not exactly the best way for working towards acceptance of foreigners in Japan, but damn… It must be fun! I wonder who enjoys this parties more, the foreigners or the Japanese.

It’s one thing if you rent the train out to have a party it’s another if you abuse public transit for the sheer purpose of acting like an idiot like most of the people on this train are doing.

I didn’t know about this until the police called my office at the beginning of October and told our Japanese staff to tell the foreigner staff to be nice and not cause trouble on the Yamanote line this year because ‘almost all the people who caused trouble were English teachers’. I understand the sentiment and all and I’m actually never one to do this sort of thing but the idea sort of pissed me off.

If you are going try to be considerate of other people. There is no NEED to have the party on the train but for many people there is a NEED to use the train to get home.

I understand your point of vies, and I wont go to this event as I feel a bit too old for that type of fun, but its only one train and only on one line. Take the next train if its that much of a bother, like the next train is in 5 minutes?

>Take the next train if its that much of a bother, like the next train is in 5 minutes?

What about people who are already on the train??
Some people have to take certain train in order to catch another train. Nobody wants to get off the train because of someone’s crazy party.
And nobody wants to see drunken men in strange costume on a train. It is really disgusting in Japan.
And before you said such thing, you should think about whether having an alcholic party on a public transit is morally correct or not if you have a BRAIN.

Use your brain.
I have to see drunking men on the train every week. And yes, it is disgusting. but not if your Japanese?

I share the same ideas as most of you…
There is a time and a place.

Ya’ll have fun, enjoy the party, laugh and show Japanese people how to let go and enjoy life.

Don’t be idiots and harass people who aren’t part of your gig, don’t be over zealous with the beer and don’t break the law or the train.

I am just wondering why they want to do something which they do not usually do at home. I am just assuming that many of them are from countries where having drink/party in public transportation is prohibited by law.(at least it is in Australia)

People do stupid things or behave badly when they feel they are privileged to do so. OK, we don’t, normally, behave badly when we are with our boss. On the other hand, Japanese/ people from all sort of developed countries were/are notorious for their behavior in southern asian countries.

I can see what people in Tokyo are reading from this “party” thing, if this is going to happen. It is, I think, not just another closed-minded Japanese complaining to whatever foreign visitors do but more for the respect or dignity issue.

Hope this makes a bit of sense.

Kaz, fortunately or unfortunately, the Yamanote Halloween train is a lot less rowdy and a lot more peaceful than what happens on Halloween in other countries, at least in the US.

I agree with you on the respect issue. If people want to dress up, fine. Bothering other people is not cool and other people shouldn’t have to put up with it. Having a rowdy party on a public train is forcing whatever you’re doing on other people, which is just being a dick.

What the hell.
Unless one’s warped idea of fun is causing grief for others, I fail to understand why, of all places, these people want to act like f***tards on public transportation. I have absolutely no problem if they find a place to party ahd have fun where they don’t annoy and make life unpleasant for unrelated bystanders.
But for crying out loud, alcohol, singing, and general jackass-ery on a train? I really hope these people get rounded up and thrown in jail. Before would be even better but the Japanese police isn’t too big on preemptive acts, so I’m not getting my hopes up too much for that. Too bad.

Some wonderfully anti-whitey comments on that update link. I tend to agree with this: “日本の電車だからやるんだろうな
NYの電車でやってたら他の乗客に殴られるか逮捕されるもんな”
(“They do it as it’s a Japanese train – if they tried it on a NY train they’d get their arses handed to them by the other passengers.”)

Why so anti-Aussie? Is this an Aussie thing in particular?

It is a very annoying act in Japan to make noise in a train.
If you cannot act according to a Japanese manner, I want you to return to the native place country.

It is the same as TERRORISM that you are going to do it.

I am finished with a report for an embassy and a railroad manager.

I strongly suggest that it is canceled a plan.

This bbs’s url has been posted on a 2ch thread as already informed, and thus these above comments are here. I’d be happy to see responses from prospective party-goers.
In the 2ch threads, some counteractions are discussed, needless to say informing authorities, but also burning flags of the US, UK, Canada etc,., defiling and burning the Bible in front of you guys, throwing bins of soysause over your heads, making petitions “not” to accept Nova teachers’ petitions. Isn’t it FUN?
What do you think of this?
Personally I would like to see both — the party and counteractions – happen. Life would be less borinng in Tokyo.

This kind of FOOLISH act is not ABSOLUTLY accepted in Japan. Please, understand your plan only puts passangers and train crews to a great deals of trouble and confusion. This is the rule; public place is not for yours but for every person. So, you should choose the right place like a disco or casual bar if you hope to enjoy Halloween party. I wish you guys don’t repeat the silly party like last year and improve the settlement toward foreigners.

また本文中に「山手線でハロウィーンパーティーを計画している人がいるという情報を得た」ということが書かれているものの、このサイト自体はその計画を推奨しているわけではない。

Hmm… I guess my earlier comment is stuck in the spam filter?

Unless one’s warped sense of “fun” involves making life miserable for commuters, I fail to understand why there’s so much support for this nonsense.
9 pm, commuting home on a crowded train from a long stressful day at the office, the last thing I want to encounter in an enclosed space is a crowd of jackasses doing their jackass-ery on public transportation.
Although it would be easy enough to avoid assuming the hooligans don’t screw up the schedule by delaying operation (which in itself is somewhat likely), I don’t see why I have to make the least bit of effort to accommodate/avoid the people who decided that it would be fine to break laws and cause unpleasantness for other people for the sake of partying.

Interesting how many of the comments from the Japanese side are so much more spiteful and angry than English comments that JP tends to get, even in the more opinionated threads. Actual death threats, for example, as in the attempt above, are quite rare. Of course this is just mindless ranting and will not happen, but I can’t help wonder if it violates the posting guidelines….

I don’t remember why your original comment was deleted, but your second comment was deleted because it was just a comment complaining about how I deleted your previous comment.

Anyway, thanks for the picture of the scene at Shinagawa.

In a slightly unrelated topic, is it just me and my non-major metropolitan centre, or is Halloween really big this year all of a sudden? A few years back there was nothing, then a few small-scale Halloweeny things, but this year, pretty much everywhere….

I think the sad part is that all of this may be tarnishing the image of the Japanese more than the image of the foreigners. There are nearly 9000 hours in a year, and a party that only amounts to 1/9000th of the year would just result in people of all ages in Canada laughing and saying, “well as long as no one got hurt, I hope they had a good time.” But if the Japanese don’t like the party, I would be more than happy to respect the difference in culture and not participate.
HOWEVER
The flood of racist and threatening responses from the Japanese objectors has left a deep impression on me – literally dozens of posts calling foreigners terrorists and barbarians from barbaric countries, that we are supporting terrorists who will want to use nerve gas on the line, and a shocking number of threats to burn our flags and use knives and explosives to kill foreigners. Anyone reading these comments knows I am barely scratching the surface here.
I have been to Tokyo and Saitama before and loved it. I am currently applying to universities in Japan and was hoping to make it my home, but the image of the polite Japanese has really been damaged for me now. Yes, racism and dumbasses exist in Canada too, but a single angry racist comment in Canada would result in even those opposed to the party telling the racist person that such an attitude is uncalled for, and to be more constructive next time. I had experienced some mild racism in Saitama, but nothing I couldn’t shrug off.
However, the flood here of not only racist comments, but outright anger and a desire to see foreigners killed, is more sad than appalling. Maybe the Japanese will be happy to know they have achieved a small victory, because I don’t know if I want to live in a country where this is how people feel beneath the surface. While those of us currently outside Japan can read up on the racism and hatred toward foreigners, it’s not until you read a torrent of hatred like this, which has been posted in a remarkably short period of time, that we get to experience what is perhaps the true extent of the situation foreigners face in Japan. Even if this is the worst possible sample of Japanese hatred toward non-Japanese, I would like to thank the Japanese posters for sharing their true feelings with me.

“Yes, racism and dumbasses exist in Canada too, but a single angry racist comment in Canada would result in even those opposed to the party telling the racist person that such an attitude is uncalled for, and to be more constructive next time.”

These comments came from people on 2ch, not a board known for its high moral standards of behaviour, and are about as representative of the sort of attitudes you will encounter at a Japanese university as being mugged in Central Park is like checking into the Plaza Hotel. These are the worst examples, and left unchecked as those Japanese who don’t mind can’t be bothered to post (though there were a few calmer ones). Don’t let it put you off: there are far more realistic and serious issues to worry about before making Japan your home than to worry about the storm-in-a-sake-cup that is 2ch extremism.

Do they feel like this beneath the surface? Some might, but a small minority, and so long as they keep it beneath the surface you’ll survive.

Hahaha. I like your mugging vs. Plaza Hotel analogy. I must admit I’m unfamiliar with 2ch, and will check it out first hand after writing this little paragraph. You’re right in that there are many serious issues to consider before making Japan my home, but I think being hated by the whole of the general public (as 2ch-ers seem to wish was truly the case) would rank up there among the top issues. That been said, thanks for enlightening me about the wrath of 2ch.

As a side note, who’s this guy who says, “u should all get deported, including the NOVA teachers”? Silly japanese-filipino, there are no NOVA teachers anymore.
(^_-)
I particularly like how the line, “if u want fun go back to you country,” implies that there is no fun to be had in Japan.

New Tourism Japan slogans:
“Come to Japan…and after, return home for some fun.”
“Japan!…remember to bring a book.”
“For a good time, dial any country code except ‘81′ ”
Okay. Admittedly one of those may or may not have come from a bathroom stall, but, as it was fun, it could not have been a bathroom stall in Japan.
So long.

Well, now that it’s a coupel days later, I guess you got to bear the brunt of the opposition to jackass-ery, James. Congrats.

I hope the 2ch folks at least had the decency to click on some Google ads while they were spamming you.

What’s so sad about this is that, like pretty much anything involving any foreigner on 2ch, it automatically became about race and xenophobia. Then again, it is probably true that exceedingly few of the participants in the Yamanote Halloween train would engage in such activity were they not able to take advantage of what is normally a pretty passive crowd on Tokyo’s trains.
