Chad Mullane & JSDF Cakes

October 24th, 2007 by James

Goofy foreign comedian Chad Mullane does a live report from a JSDF gift shop (it looks like it’s inside a museum, anyone know where it is located?), where he accidentally knocks some products off the shelf:

Does your country’s military sell souvenir banana cakes and kewpie cellphone straps?

What is he on and is it legal? And where can I get some?
No, wait, come to think of it, I’d prefer to get my teeth pulled than go on TV acting like that. Which probably explains why I am (a) not a goofy dorky wide show ‘comedian’ or (b) why I change the channel as soon as this sort of thing is shown.

At least he isn’t catering too much to the Goofy Gaijin image – all bit-rate ‘comedians’ on these sorts of shows act like this, though not usually with such annoying voices.

No idea where this is, but the Army (and other SDF) gift shops do have some pretty interesting and cool stuff once you get past the cellphone straps and banana cakes. Some very unique stuff that could make an interesting conversation piece back home, especially considering the pre-1945 history of the Japanese Army.

He’s probably been eating too much banana cake. Too much banana cake gets your brain into a mushy state.

The Ground Self Defense Force PR Center (Museum) is located in Tokyo Nerima Ward Oizumi-gakuen-cho. I can’t find the official page for it, but here’s a fan page:

I’m planning on a trip with a GSDF Ranger friend of mine, but I doubt there’s anything I’ll be buying there since I already have my fill of rikujoujieitai omiyage from local festivals at the base.
