Chimpanzee Pan-kun Hates Snakes!

October 17th, 2007 by James

Poor Pan-kun. On last week’s Shimura Zoo he was clearly not expecting to be served fruit wrapped in terrifying snakes! Here’s the video:

teaching an ape to lose their fear of things that look like snakes? maybe not a good idea for survival.

he’s a chimp not an ape, and he’s not in the wild so i don’t think you need to worry about his survival instincts too much. but scaring the crap out of him and pressuring him into going near the plate multiple times just for laughs, seems kind of harsh but at least they used toys instead of non-poisonous live snakes and i doubt he will be worse off due to this experience.

and what about that dog at the end of the episode? that was some messed up stuff. did it have epilepsy or something? just put it out of its misery, geez.

Chimps are apes, stupid. As are humans, gorillas, bonobos, orangutans……

And that red bandanna and snazzy overalls probably don’t help his survivability.

Watch how quickly he jumps back after he sees it’s a snake. That’s incredable responce time.

Yeah golly gee, it’s almost as if he was trained to jump back as soon as the lid came off.

Anyone sent this to PETA yet? Kinda sick that this guy gets off on teasing a chimp…And I agree with Tmas; how is trying to confuse an animal’s sense of survival beneficial to it? Or is this simply about proving who’s boss? Arrogant.

they arent going to just let this chimp go into the wild. it will spend its life in captivity, chillin with japanese dudes. see how smart it was? opening doors, and knowing when told to close it.

I think that the thing that makes this slightly better even though the poor little guy was scared, is that the person showed him that it wasn’t real by opening the banana. I highly doubt that pan-kun will be going back out into the wild so like other people said, it isn’t messing with his instincts too much.

Yep, the last pan-kun post was only his last “field trip” into the outside world. There will still be plenty of segments featuring pan with his trainer or pan in the “forest” that is being built for him.

Kind of strange, as Pan-kun has seen snakes before, and handled the situation quite differently:

Ah, those wacky Japanese.

I think somebody should wrap some live snakes around that’s guy’s banana. If you know what I mean.

I think the chimp would be amused.
