Coverage of the Nova Teacher Protest

October 16th, 2007 by James

A fresh video of the Union-organized protest march by Nova Teachers (from Asahi TV):

The Japan Times also has an article up about the issue:

The General Union, which represents foreign-language teachers and other staff at Nova Corp., said Monday it will lodge a complaint with the labor authorities against the company for delaying wage payments.

The union said it will initiate formal proceedings with the Osaka Central Labor Standards Inspection Office on Tuesday morning either in the name of the union or Nova employees.

Update: Here’s a TV report on the Osaka protest march (for TBS in the Kinki Region):

Update 2: Fuji TV also reported on the demonstration:

And Mainichi has an article up about it:

The Nova teachers’ branch of the National Union of General Workers Nambu also joined with other unions from western Japan to ask Labor Standards Supervision Offices in Tokyo and Osaka to pursue a criminal case against NOVA and its president, Nozomu Sahashi.

The unions accuse Sahashi and NOVA of breaking the Labor Standards Law.

NOVA union officials pointed out that the chain has failed to pay some of its English conversation teachers since July and that payment of September’s monthly wages for all its teachers were late. Teachers were supposed to be paid on Monday, but the company did not forward entitled wages, instead sending a letter to instructors saying that it would pay them by Oct. 19.

And there’s another article at Mainichi with the clever title “Oh NOVA! More English students sue chain.”

I just wanna know one thing, what shit was the girl smoking, when she thought wearing that ridiculous suit would be a good thing to wear at a strike about unfair labor practices. Or just in general for that reason, leave the suits for Halloween honey!, Just cause your a foreigner doesn’t mean people don’t think you look stupid.

Seriously… What the hell are they doing going out looking like that. What a motley crew of douchebags. I mean, I can respect that they want to protest, but at least make yourselves look presentable. They look the hokiest union strikers ever.. Teamsters put like these folks in the back of Lincoln town cars and drive em off the pier. Pathetic looking.

Ye gods, suits and ties, mates. At least try and not look like your typical hung-over NOVA warm body when trying to impress people with your ’sincerity’. Do they dress like that for work?

Well, to be fair, that was the NOVA mascot and nearly everyone who was an ‘English teacher’ in Japan was really into those Japanese cartoons and sometimes dressing up as their favorite character. But yeah, even if that girl was an exception, the people in that crowd do look like a bunch of beer guzzling frat house kids I’d often see back home.

Am I the only one who thinks that girl looks strangely sexy in the bunny suit?

It’s not the fact that they dressed like this to strike. It’s the fact that they dressed like this for a press conference and a meeting with government officials I find extremely inappropriate. They are attempting to do some good, but if you can’t dress like you want to be taken seriously–especially in a country like Japan–people will be less likely to give a damn about what you are trying to do.

In many ways I am very glad that I was not around for that whole mess.
