Japan’s First Schoolgirl Uniform

October 9th, 2007 by James

Mainichi’s English edition posted an article over the weekend about two private high schools that are claiming to have first introduced the sailor-style schoolgirl uniform to Japan. While the story of the dispute is a good one, I found this old photograph of the first school uniform used by Heian Jogakuin to be far more interesting. What’s up with that creepy dog-like creature standing below the schoolgirl?!

I believe the dog and the background are both painted. That’s why the dog looks so strange.
