What the Huck? Nagoya University Students Vandalize Sand Dunes

Bizarre news from Mainichi:

Members of a student group who engraved a huge word on the Tottori sand dunes in Tottori Prefecture are being investigated by government environment officials, it has been learned.

Group members, including students from Nagoya University, reportedly scraped the letters “HUCK” on the dunes, covering an area about 50 meters long. The Ministry of the Environment subsequently launched an investigation into their actions, on suspicion that they violated the Natural Parks Law.

The students, who participated in various outdoor activities, have reportedly apologized for marking the dunes.

“We weren’t aware that we were acting illegally. Half of it was for fun, but it was careless,” a member of the group was quoted as saying.

One assumes a sand dune, continually renewed by the wind and environment, won’t be scarred long. And they can always rake over it. Anyway, those crappy camel tourist traps are a greater blot anyway….

On the US atlantic you ususally aren’t allowed to touch the dunes because it causes faster dune erosion.
The dunes protect the wild life and something or other so they are deemed important enough that they don’t want them to unnaturally erode.

Here in The Netherlands we have a lot of dunes and you can just walk on them or whatever. I personally don’t see what the big fuzz about it is.

Good point, VonSkippy, but it’s not about playing with sand, it’s about them doing something without thinking that it was probably not ok. There’s no law against it (probably), nor any kind of regulation or rule. But. You know. It’s just not DONE!!! It’s “JO-SHIKI”!! EVERYbody knows it’s not right to do it!!!!! Don’t YOU?!?!?!? It’s. The. RUUUUUUULLE! That was their big crime. That is major.
