I could remember a recent Utaban episode where they featured some cool looking alarm clocks with various ways to turn the thing off.

Ah, I remember something similar to this.
It was a an alarm clock with a tiny four piece puzzle attached to the top. When the alarm sounded, the puzzle would pop off, and the sleepy-head would have to re-assemble the puzzle to stop the alarm.
