There have been concerns that Apple would not be able to sell the iPhone in Japan because most people would think "so what, we have all this web-browsing stuff already in our domestic phones". The local population won't have thought about usability at all. Now, if they end up buying the iPod Touch... and start to realise how much usuable the UI is.... then maybe they'll start to appreciate the advantages over the local phones when iPhone arrives in Japan (assuming of course they make iPhone proper 3G). It’s could actually end up being quite a clever move by Apple (intentional, maybe not?).
