Why Don’t Japanese Kids Want to be Sumo Wrestlers?

With the Asashoryu scandal continuing, the sport of sumo wrestling has been getting a lot of press coverage. Here’s a report from last week that takes a look at how Japanese kids who practice sumo for fun view the sport:

The reporter asks some of the sumo kids if they want to become professionals when they are older and fails to get a positive response. Even when a popular sumo wrestler asks a crowd of kids, only one of them said he wanted to become a professional. When a group of five boys who are becoming professional sumo wrestlers were asked to name a wrestler they were aiming to become like, not a single one of them mentioned the name of a current Japanese wrestler…
