Japanese-Style Second Life

September 3rd, 2007 by James

A survey back in June found that most Japanese people equated the term “second life” with retirement, but I imagine that there are at least a few Japanese people out there who are aware of the crappy virtual world’s presence in their country. One clue that supports this theory is the presence of videos on YouTube showing Japanized areas of the Second Life game world.

For example, it has an Akihabara district:

And there’s a branch of Book-Off in the Shibuya area of Second Life:

The avatars used on the popular Japanese forum 2channel also make an appearance in the virtual world:

But there is still no word yet on whether NOVA will be setting up shop on Second Life to fill the growing demand for Second Life English lessons….

NHK’s “Close Up Gendai” did a feature on Second Life (and especially some of the weirder aspects of it) 2 or 3 months ago, so it has definitely gained some awareness.

Now having voice in secondlife language courses are a possibility.
