Ultimate Haruhi Dance All Over Japan

August 9th, 2007 by James

A video of American YouTuber MaggieMehve performing the Haruhi dance across Japan:

From the video description:

In July of 2007, I studied abroad in Japan. Before this, I have cosplayed and danced as Haruhi Suzumiya (at Anizona 2007). Due to my constant worship of Haruhi Suzumiya, I decided to do the dance in various scenaries of Japan that I was visiting. Here’s a list of some of these areas:
Yoyogi Park
Deer Park (Nara)
Imperial Palace
Akihabara
Harajuku
Hanayashiki
Tokyo Tower
Fuji-kyu
Tokyo Station
Kyoto Imperial Palace
Nijo Castle
Kinkakuji
and MANY more weird/snazzy places

Uh.. I hate to be a hater, but that sucks. Sorry, but I just can’t stand these kind of people. For some reason the worst parts of Japanese pop culture get gobbled up by unimaginative American kids. Ugh. You may flame me when you feel need.

Regardless, thank you James for showing us what these gaijin criminals look and act like!!!

Ugh, I was thinking the same thing. It wouldn’t be so bad if the girl could pop and lock those moves a little better.

Oh definitely. My taste in Japanese pop culture aside, if I judge her performance on its merits alone it still isn’t that good. Its stilted and jerky, not smooth and crisp like something akin to pop lockin’ should be. Good point Lord Kook.

Being a lord and all you should give out titles. I would like to be Sir Shazzb0t, Knight of Mars and beater of ass.

Re: shazzb0t’s post

I get you. It seems that many people who come and study in Japan as college students live in a simlacrum of Japan in which the entire landscape–and with it the country’s history and culture–becomes a Disneyland that is only there for the fulfillment of their childish fantasies. While I thought the video was silly and I’m sure some Japanese otaku have done the same thing I’m glad I’m no longer in contact with gaijin like that.

Bingo. You hit the nail right on the head. I know exactly what you mean when you write you are glad you are no longer in contact with gaijin like that. When I studied abroad in Tokyo there was a young man who would walk around in a cape, cat ears and a little bell around his neck like a cat. Absolutely, ridiculous…

Before I even knew what Haruhi was(about a year ago?) I saw these zombies doing it on youtube. They did it like pros, it was amazing.

In her defense she was brave to go through with this.

It must be frightening to live with such a big stick up your b*tt that you have to make fun of a young women that was just having some fun.

I’m sooooooo tired of all the gaijin cracks. I’ve seen plenty of Japanese tourists make fools of themselves in Germany and the States, but I still took the time to talk with them and have some fun.

I agree VonSkippy–this is a 16 year old girl having some fun, some of you people need to step away from the computer and stop being so judgmental.

I know she’s having fun, and let her have her slack and what not, but can’t we have fun making fun of otaku too!

Who want’s to go laugh at the Takarazuka-nerds with me tomorrow?

The way her movements don’t quite sync up sometimes makes me wonder if she was dancing from memory without playing the music. But it looks like she had a lot of fun :) I’m not sure I would dance amidst those Nara deer, they can get nasty! I suppose as long as she wasn’t holding any crackers she was safe.

I was with Maggie when she did this. Maggie is an awesome person who speaks Japanese close to fluently. She did this just to have some fun. No way is she just a stupid otaku/gaijin, trust me I saw far too many when I was living in Tokyo.
