American Journalist Reports On Minnesota Bridge Collapse In Broken Japanese

When tragedy struct in Minnesota this week, one Japanese TV network turned to an American freelance journalist named Gerry Fisher (sp?) to report from the scene. Here is the video of him delivering a report in Japanese:

Ouch. That was painful. I note they mercifully cut him off when he seemed utterly lost at the end. I would guess he does speak some Japanese, but that the report was written by someone else. Could be wrong of course – he may have just choked from being on live TV.

Any reason why he had to speak in Japanese in the first place? I mean it’s not like FNN couldn’t dub or subtitle his report or anything. Instead of reporting a tragic event with any modicum of seriousness it ended up being a tragic comedy (of sorts).

I feel so bad for him…some of his pronouncing sounded pretty good though. I give him an A for effort.
