Japanese Commercial: “SHUT THE F-CK UP!”

Let this commercial for a new Richard Gere movie, which aired on TV last night during the Japan/Korea soccer match, be a reminder to you all that swearing in English is A-OK on Japanese TV:

Ah, how refreshing it is to unexpectedly hear somebody say STFU during a commercial break!

Strange indeed. I was also quite surprised when, in the first episode of Hana Yori Dango drama season 2, Makino Tsukushi went to New York. She ran into a group of black people and they were using all sorts of colorful language. Maybe it was okay because the drama aired a little late (Friday 22:00)

There may be swearing, but WTF?, was that ad being shown DURING the actual match, i.e. not during the half-time break? That’s the real shocking thing here.

I hope that NEVER happens in the UK, and I’m happy to sacrifice commercials with rude words for it.

While “STFU” is, understandably, unairable on English-speaking media, those 4 words don`t have quite the same impact in Japan, where English isn`t really spoken. When swearing is done in a foreign tongue in your country, do the censors or the audience notice?
