Japan Photo of the Week: Pompadour

July 28th, 2007 by Evan

Pompadour, known as リーゼント in Japanese, is one of Japan’s interesting adopted subcultures and has had a fairly strong influence on different aspects of society. Anyone that has read manga or watched anime has almost definitely seen a character or two “rocking” this style. Also it was (maybe still is) popular, or associated with, with gangs and yakuza members.

Like all subcultures or interest groups, these guys like to gather and show off their hair, leather clothes and “dance” moves. You can find them dancing in Yoyogi Park on Sundays which is convenient because you can just stop by after you are done checking out the lolitas in Harajuku.

I found a group of them in Odaiba once. I think it is still on youtube. Their dance moves are kind of funny.
