Japanese Train Departure Melodies

July 8th, 2007 by James

If you’ve traveled around Japan by train, you’ve probably realized that different stations and rail lines often play different departure melodies. Thanks the to wonder that is YouTube, Japanese rail fans can share these melodies with us all:

Video 1: JR East Melodies
Video 2 Some More JR East Melodies (Featuring favorites such as the Ebisu melody and Tokyo Disney’s melody)
Video 3: Even More JR East Melodies

There’s also one guy who enjoys playing these melodies on the piano:

For more information and more great melodies, check out No-Sword’s informative post on this subject!

Call me crazy, but I want to hear recordings of the automated voices in the station. I find the announcements at Shibuya particularly amusing. “Shibu-YA, Shibu-YA…” It sounds like something out of Street Fighter.

I burst out crying when I heard these melodies! I have no interest in trains, but I realized that in some way these melodies are what really makes me feel like “being in Japan” and I was struck with a very powerful desire to go back upon hearing them.

I wrote an article discussing the use of these melodies as a way-finding tool in the following article…

There’s a yahoo widget I found that has recordings of these melodies.
You can hear with just a click of the mouse!
