Ummm…actually it’s both. Rurouni Kenshin was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump in the early/mid 90’s…the anime sort of ran in the middle, starting a few years after the manga, but ending before the manga finished in the late 90’s.

YAY! Patlabor 2 got in there! I really, REALLY love that film. Most publicly underrated animated film ever.
Nice to see Laputa was number 3 too – thats my fave ghibli film.

I was surprised to see cowboy bebop 2nd in the public charts. I always get the impression that it was a bit of a flop in japan because its never mentioned anymore, and there is hardly any merchandise (figures etc) for it.

No samurai champloo? :-(

Hallo,

To be honest, the comment about not ‘being in the know’, or ‘up-to-date’, aren’t really fair comments from Steve and Everlasting. A large amount of those Anime titles, right from the top were produced before 1996, 11 years ago. The top title, ‘Neon Genesis Evangelion’ (A personal Fav. of mine) was created in 1995. ‘Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind’ and ‘Laputa: Castle in the Sky’ are created by one of the most famous Anime producers ever, Studio Ghibli, and were both made somewhere between 1984 – 1986. On top of that, the ‘Gundam’ series has been running for over 25 years…. ‘Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro’ is a title from the front man of Ghibli, predating Ghibli’s creation, which was made in 1975 (I think). On top it all, one of the only ‘modern’ Anime titles at the top was ‘Ghost In A Shell: Stand Alone Complex’(2000+). To hear, considering ‘Ghost In A Shell’ the manga was 1980’s, and the first film being made in 1995, on top of the fact ‘Ghost In A Shell is one of the most Iconic Animes for a more adult audience, ever, I am astonished to hear you haven’t at least heard of it. I would seriously consider expanding your Anime horizons, since, quite frankly, from what you have said, there is a great deal of wonderful master-pieces just waiting to be discovered by you. You should also make time (On top of the titles I mentioned, due to them being Brilliant) to watch ‘Akira’, being as Iconic as ‘Ghost In A Shell’ (and being older), ‘RahXephon’, for it’s resemblance to ‘Neon Gen.’, yet difference resulting in a more uplifting experience and of course for some, pure, visual excitement, ‘Karas’. It has a good story, with not too much emphasis as the main feature of said Anime is the amazing use of appropriate 3D and 2D combo mixes to provide a treat to the eyes in a futuristic, fantasy, fighting thrill.

agreed i still consider myself to be quite young (20) and i am a big fan of all anime the ones you mention arent for children but are some i would recommend newer animes ( death note, code geass, ect) havent stood the test of time although i believe them to be great none the less. Macross although an alright anime hasnt been a premier anime really its good but thats about it. i disagree with the list a little but all of these are worth watching trust me

I’m going to be the guy everyone hates here.

While I have nothing at all against anime and really like some films (in other words, it has as many good points as other types of film), I’ve been that into it.

I had always assumed that I just hadn’t seen the right movies, that I was missing something. However, I’ve seen a number of the movies on the list (12 of the top 15) and have to ask, in all sincerity, are standards really that low? For example, Miyazaki is good, but is he really among the all-time best the genre has to offer? “Cagliostro” was fine entertainment, but are there really not more than four better anime films?

If so, I haven’t been missing a thing.

This is coming from a person who enjoys Eva more than any other anime. The first episode is one of the worst episodes of any show ever. And beyond that, the show doesn’t get really good until about halfway through the series. Before episode 16 (i think) it seems to be a fairly mundane giant-robot, mech, or whatever you want to call it, anime.

but compared to evangelion the story is very little
Evangelion is a masterpiece, if u find flaws in evangelion its basically cus ur not smart or phylosophical enough to understand it all. Evangelion really deserves to be #1

and those who say RahXephon was better, well it maybe couldve been if it didnt rip off evangelion that much.

Elfen Lied should be here btw :P

Sorry but i’d have to disagree with you there Evangelion was interesting but not a master piece. If you never knew anything regarding phylosophy I can understand the amazement, but I was diappointed as it seemed to state the obvious. In terms of an anime for the period it was a new direction but nothing more.

I want those hours of my life back.

Did you really have to write such a major spoiler? Not everyone has been able to watch it yet. Some people wait till the DVD’s come out to watch these shows. And as the first DVD has just come out in North America, most people in the States would find this to be a rather annoying spoiler.

I agree that One Piece *the manga* is great, but One Piece the anime is one of the biggest pieces of garbage I’ve ever seen. It’s poorly animated (something like 5 frames per second), they use digital animation to repeat the same scenes over and over, and worst of all, the animated show is chock full of filler episodes. The manga is starting to get a little repetitive, but the animated show did a horrible disservice to the quality of the original author’s work.

Naruto and Bleach were also good series ruined by fillers. This is the curse of Jump Anime – they start the series before the manga is finished and end up watering down the content with garbage.

One Piece is up to episode 383 now. Any series of any quality is never going to be this long.

hahaha you don’t even watch one piece
one piece fillers are Oda’s(creator of one piece) work too & one piece fillers are great, coz the author himself planned it the fillers are 90 episodes out of400 episodes & well made, unlike naruto & bleach have a tons of fillers
naruto & bleach half of the series are shitty fillers
they planned the show, first simple animation & then every ark they improve their animation, thats a wise thing to do in a long term anime & they use old school style,to draw lots of expressions & actions, that’s why the fight scenes are great & lots of expressions & lots of fight scenes than any other anime
they were hand drawn like dragon ball, unlike other anime like naruto & bleach lots of computer technology used in it,& they suck at it now,coz there cramming
Toei animation who animate both of the 2kings,
dragon ball & one piece
& one piece episodes 1-100 are made in year 1997 & 1998
& air/shown in tv in year 1999

Totally agree with you, One Piece (the Japanese version) is the something of an art, TOP show, not only it has a unique art style but also the voice acting and the characters development are amazing and the best I’ve seen. Regarding the fillers, One piece fillers are never interfering with the actual arcs, not like other Animes where they mix fillers with the original stories wish sucks.
In One piece you have an original arc story after they finish it you will have a short filler arc (5-10ep) then they continue the story with next arc, that way they do not screwed the Anime. In my case I usually take a break from One piece when they finish an Arc and skip the filler arc knowing that I didn’t miss a thing from the show.

Hi,

Could some one help my find a find a cartoon I saw when I was a kid. I don’t have a name, but I saw it in 1994. I really need to know cause I want to get hold of it. They showed it to us in school and it’s kinda etched in my brain.

All I can remember is:

1. It was a sci-fi animation within the context of the solar system.
2. It had battles in it (I know that won’t help much).
3. There was a train that travelled between the planets in the solar system, I think it could travel beyond that also.
4. Anyone who has seen it cannot forget the despair felt when the train reached Pluto. There was something about it being the last stop for the protagonist.

I REALLY need to get a hold of the name, and I think you guys are the best for the job since you’ve been into the scene for a while.

Thanks.

Yeah, the thing is, Evangelion isn’t just mecha, it’s psicological, it’s phylosophical, and it’s apocalyptic, the music is great, the characters are intriguing and deep, and the most incredible thing is that no matter how many times you see it, you never get to fully understand it. =)

Comment by marbs

“and the most incredible thing is that no matter how many times you see it, you never get to fully understand it.”

so true! that’s why i like NGE! no matter how many times you watch it, there’s always something about the story that would never be understood, but you’d want to persist on trying to understand it anyway. there’s just something about NGE that you’d want to seek but you’ll have a hard time finding it! just like a treasure! and that’s what makes NGE so intriguing!

i understand some people found it boring, but i guess it just depends on the preference of the watcher, either he/she likes action packed but wasn’t satisfied by the lack of action compared to other mecha anime, or more story-driven which the viewer didn’t fully understand (well, you’re not alone! the only person that could understand it fully is its own creator, hideaki anno!^^). and most people found NGE more on the action side because of the “mecha” genre. well, the action is just about 20% part of NGE. the story involving all psychological, philosophical, and apocalyptical aspects is 80%. ^^

well, just my 2 cents anyway. no flames intended. ^^

What about the ever frustrating Twelve Kingdoms? Or Haibane Renmei? Fantastic Children? Angel Egg? Night on the Galactic Railroad? Samurai Champloo? Millenium Actress? Last Exile? Everyone knows the Dragoball series (Dragonball, Dragoball Z, and even Dragonball GT) were the best anime ever.

Probably the best cartoon in general ever ;p.

Not to mention the original dragoball was made in 1986.

Nearing a quarter of a century old and still the best.

People just dont like to admit it cause they’re jealous they didnt get to watch it air.

Look, the whole of DB/DBZ was way better than most of these anime’s. DB-GT wansn’t that great but still had its moments. Akira deserves to be in the top five. Neo shoudn’t be number one interms of excitements, but if you going for story then maybe just maybe i could understand that. My big question is are these for best anime series or best anime movies.

What in the world happened to Bleach, fate stay night, claymore, roureni kenshin, samurai deeper kyo (samurai x in the USA) or even the black blood brothers is pretty cool. Most importantly the sheer brilliance of Death Note should be at the top spot.

I see ghost in the shell was mentioned but wasn’t Ninja scroll a lot better???

What’s going on?
You sure this poll wasn’t fixed lmao, well atleast Akira’s in the top ten!

I agree with some other comments that Death Note deserves one of the top 5 spots at least for its sheer brilliance. I have yet to see a single show that even holds a candle to the remarkable complexity of the series.

im not some crazy death note fan or anything but it was an exceptional anime even if it was relatively short. I agree with you on Cowboy Bebop but not Bleach. Bleach is like Naruto, too many fillers its hard to really want to keep watching the series after so many boring episodes. Some of my favourites would be Hikaru No Go (which no1 ever mentions at all), Death Note (L is one of the most interesting characters ever in an anime), Dragon Ball/DBZ (yes they are overrated but you still gotta love em), Yu-Yu Hakusho (Dark Tournament Saga was awesome), One Piece (alright I bitched about fillers, but when this one shines its amazing) and finally although a lot of ppl hate it, Digimon (grew up on that).

ALot of the animes mentioned are way old… I think the really alot of this animes were up there is because they were translated into english and in the states kids dont care much for subed anime so only dub animes get wached. well those are just my personal feeling towards it.

Cowboy Bebop is the best anime ever made, and I’ve seen quite a few. Superb story, superb plot, characters, action-scenes… god… I love it. I can’t stop watching it, where did you see an ending like the one in Bebop? Impossible, best ending ever. Best anime ever. 10/10.

Dragonball should be much higher. I mean there’s like 400 some episodes (dragonball, DBZ, and DBGT) and like 30 some movies ..

cowboy beebop should be higher

fullmetal was an okay anime. it had a pretty annoying twist in the end that while i didnt see it coming, it still pissed me off..and the ending pissed me off too

s.cry.ed was a pretty good one im surprised it wasnt on the list to vote in the first place.

lupin III is great either original or cagliostro

Naruto is a stupid show

Bleach is better but it’s not even finished yet. give it some time

Death note is a really good “suspenseful” anime should be on there

although neon genesis is a really good anime, i still dont think it deserves #1 but top 10 for sure.

Honestly im just not a big fan of mech animes, they’re kind of overdone..there’s what like 50 of them? Sigh :(

Samurai champloo? I liked that

yu-yu hakusho should be up there

Wolfs rain? or how about Trigun? or Witch Hunter Robin?

I gotta say this, please dont hate me but Ghost in the shell was extreeeemely boring.

ok most of these manga are out dated. it’s all about naruto and bleach. yuyu hakisho and ruroni kenshin. dragonball z and gt.
and as for all of you haters naruto does have a major fan base I mean are you kidding me? and bleach is downright fantastic although it has fillers they are only 2!!!!! the bount one drags along at first but picks up a little towards the end. and the princess one is pretty good. I’ll admit narutos fillers are terrible that’s why you go onto shippuden. naruto is over it’s just a bunch of fillers that never even happened so just move onto shippuden subs. you will not regret it.
I’d like to see someone top that.

Well I am rather suprised Fruits Baskets isn’t on there.
And even more suprised Slam Dunk made the list at all.
I suppose this list doesn’t include Naruto or Bleach because both of those series (while they may be good and I’m not trying to diss here) are not ground breaking.
Naruto didn’t show us anything that we haven’t seen in anime before and the same goes for Bleach.
They tend to have repetitive fighting sequences and characters that are not very complex or in depth.
I’m stating my opinion here and don’t get me wrong both of those series are popular (of course) but I can definitely see why they wouldn’t be considered all time greatests.

Come on come on..
Respect the Japanese’s survey..

Different country, different culture, different tastes of enterainment..

Neon Genesis Evangelion is expected to Number 1 because during that time/ period, it’s the only one kind..

Hence, it’s deeply etch in the earlier viewers’ memories..

The rest of the similar anime can consider as evolution from this anime..

so Neon Genesis Evangelion is the one of the many Great Grand Mothers of Anime.. ^^

I’m a Japanese Anime fan.I’m sorry,my English is poor.

This list contains Anime that have important meaning in Anime history, I think. Naruto,One Piece,Death Note, and Animes stated in above comments are popular in Japan, too. But, those who think these Animes are landmark masterpiece in Anime history are low in Japan. And I also guess anime that has original piece like SHONEN JUMP are not taken seriously as well as original anime.

By the way, new movie series of Evangelion hits screen now in Japan. I watched it and so exited! It’s better than previous series,I think. Even if you are boring with previous series, this new series are interesting for you,I promise. Espesially, the second movie of this series is great and fun! I’m looking forward for you to seeing this new series.

I love Rock music created in US and UK. In like wise, Japanese anime are watched by people in other countries. I feel happy and hope by this.

Wow. NGE is the best series. I watched Bleach until 183, and trust me, its like putting in a third of the kool-aid packet. Watery and sour to say the least.

NGE deserves #1 By far. (IMO) Blew DN out of the water. The mainstream anime these days (Naruto Bleach One Piece yaya) suck. They’re terrible repititions. Really, the story repeats itself in such a manner:

Upraising of young man with talent-meets friends with talents-fights and owns the first “encounter”-meets match-gets owned-gets stronger-owns original owner-get owned-get stronger-owns original owner-plot-filler. Repeat all but the first 3, and theres your sh*tty mainstream crap that most seem to love because they scream and beat each other up.

If you have not seen NGE, or think it sucks, either watch it, or youre just too retarted to watch an anime that isnt spoon fed through your little ears. Pay attention.

Thanks.

Ok, would everyone shutup about Bleach? When the series started is was great for about the first 20 or so episodes, then it turned into generic anime action BS. I agree that Death Note should make the list, I also think Eureka-7 should be on more than just the fan pick. As for Kenshin, I love the guy (hell Rurouni Kenshin is what made me start liking anime), but the story is way to full of plot holes and, much like bleach, generic anime action BS to make the list.

Shout out for Legend of Galactic Heroes!

BTW this list is a fair representation for the polling audience so you retarded fan boys should go do your own stupid polls on your own stupid websites that label Naruto, Bleach, et cetera as the number one anime. Yea, that will show the Internet world who is boss. Try reading their manga versions and then you’ll realize that their authors intent and the anime adaption’s intent differ significantly. I enjoy reading Naruto(the manga) but despise the TV adaptation because it has been run through the Money grinder/press and gang raped into something that it was not at all.

Oh, and Code Geass blows chunks. I gave up within the first 10 episodes. I’d rather sink myself into something more intellectually stimulating than to watch some effeminate male go around on a hellbent revenge cycle. I hope you Code Geass fans who keep posting about that show watch Perfect Blue and get mind-raped, thank you Satoshi Kon. (enough ranting)
