Even Yakuza Have To Turn Off Their Mobile Phones

June 14th, 2007 by James

One yakuza thought he could bully his way into using his cellphone on an airplane, but as the entertaining reenactment above shows, the flight crew did not back down when faced with his rudeness and he was arrested:

On March 10, the gangster whose name was not immediately disclosed refused to switch off his mobile phone on All Nippon Airways Flight 609 bound for Miyazaki from Tokyo even though its captain issued a written notice ordering him to turn it off, investigators said.

Before then, cabin attendants repeatedly warned him but he would not follow their instructions.

“I have five mobile phones, so it takes me a long time to turn them off,” he reportedly told cabin attendants. “These mobile phones automatically turn on. Why don’t you arrest me?”

The jetliner that was taxiing to the runway returned to the ramp. It took off 30 minutes behind schedule after forcing the gangster to get off the plane.

Nice to see some Japanese TV which doesn’t have Japanese subtitles for every word. I need to watch more news to practise my listening skills. =)

Top of the line Japanese phones are what’s called 3.5G, according to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3.5G).
4th Generation phones are set for commercial release in 2010, apparently.
