McDonald’s To Adopt Regional Pricing In Japan

June 12th, 2007 by James

From Japan Economy News:

The fast food giant intends to raise prices in Tokyo by 3-5% and lower prices in the countryside by 2-3% on average. Facing a growing disparity between rent and labor costs in the city and the countryside, McDonald’s is saying that it is being forced to make this move.

Good news for me, bad news for all of you living in Tokyo (except of course for you Ronald-haters out there).

Update: It appears I won’t be getting a discount after all, but at least I won’t have to pay more. Here’s a map of the price increase/decrease zones:

Price Increase Zones: Tokyo, Kanagawa, Osaka, Kyoto
Price Decrease Zones: All ‘them blue-colored countryside prefectures.

Next time someone asks me why I’m still in Yamaguchi I will answer:
“For the cheaper burgers.”

I can’t believe Hiroshima is considered more inaka than Kochi or Toyama or the Noto Peninsula (if in fact there IS a McDonalds in Noto).

First they raise my taxes, now they’re going to raise the price of my burgers? Man, it’s a rough life in Kyoto….
