Remind me never to visit Ibaraki-ken…
I don’t understand. Ibaragi’s on the East coast of Honshu. The foreign invaders are landing on the West coast of Kyushu.
Sheesh. These are the cops, you’d think they’d know that already.
Wrote allot, but decided to leave it out. I read allot of Debito’s stuff, great articles and very interesting read, especially the “Only Japanese” articles. All I’ll say is how much I think of the GOJ immigration policy, is a joke. That’s it.
Anyway, this poster just makes me shake my head in disappointment.
… Is that a 3 of diamonds on the back of his shield? Well thats sorta random.
Anyone can photoshop this…
‘Dem Mexicans be sneakin’ in to Japan now. Holy bejebbus. I bettin’ they be wantin’ to be workin’ in them ichigo feilds takin’ that good work away from ‘dem honest Japanesers.
Haha, that was funny!
I’m glad someone realized it was a joke. I was afraid of getting flamed.
Well, illegal immigration is a crime you know. I’m sure the Japanese police has more to be concerned about then illegal immigration, and this poster is a bit on the shill side, but i’m sure the Japanese aren’t about to start gassing illegal immigrants.
‘Human rights activist’ Arudou Debito is sarting (if he hasn’t already) to annoy me with his hysterical publicity stunts.
I would understand if that poster read something along the lines of stopping all foreigners from entering the country (which, to my understanding, even some of te most conservative politicians discourage and oppose), but we are talking about illegal emigration here, which, as the name implies, is a felony. Ergo, it must be prevented.
That’s all there is to it. No need to panic.
Illegal immigration is a crime, and I certainly agree that criminals should be arrested. However, why do they need 6 cops in heavy riot gear to take down a single unarmed immigrant? The poster is clearly sensationalizing the threat these immigrant laborers pose.
James, how do you know he’s a labourer? Might he be a spy?
I do agree that the 6-on-1 is a bit OTT, but to link it to illegal labour is a bit of a stretch, and the sort of wild speculation that should be left to Debito.
Well, he is wearing workman clothing that pretty much all laborers wear in Japan, but as you say, it could all be a disguise/front for his espionage. Even if he was a spy, 6 heavily armored cops with riot shields is sensational overkill.
It’s dramatic licence actually. A single cop stopping a random SE Asian on an Ueno street wouldn’t look as cool. And your post title is blatantly misleading: stop ILLEGAL foreigners at the shores would be far better.
A spy, man this ain’t no James Bond Movie.
If they are illegal then it only makes sense to stop them from coming in. I live in the U.S, and immigration is a BIG problem. It is unfair, injustice, and no one like it.
The immigration problem is far overstated/overrated in the U.S.
How is the immigration problem so “far overstated/overrated” in the U.S.? Are you suggesting the million or so illegal immigrants living here in the States is not a problem for Americans? When you have a Dum* F*$k for a president who actually is entertaining the idea of giving green cards to the million (or so) illegal immigrants (just because they were successful in getting here in the first place). This is not such a big deal to you? I guess not if you are living in Japan where you have 6+ riot cops beating down on one illegal immigrant.
But if they get green cards, then they aren’t illegal anymore, so you shouldn’t have a problem.
Unless you just hate dirty spics.
Unfortunately that’s not the real issue is it. Hell why not give a Japanese “green card” to that guy (getting beat down by the 6 riot cops in Japan) as well (by your logic). Illegal is exactly that. They made their way into a country (be it America, Japan, or any other country in the world) not legitimately. They don’t have any rights to the country that they invaded. So why in the world would the leader of a country allow them to have full rights similar to any citizen born and raised there?
And BTW I didn’t specifically point out any ethnicity/race/or national origin. Just because it just so happens that a good percentage of the illegal immigrants come from down south (way down) into America it doesn’t mean that I have problems with any group of people (based on national origin). I have problems with anyone who makes their way into any country illegally simply because it makes it harder for everyone else who come legitimately.
Umm….because right now American economy depends on those illegal immigrants?
This “immigrantion issue” is far far far more complicated than just “they shouldn’t be here because they come in here illegally!!!” If you really want to understand what’s really going on and why “giving them greencard” is an option, please please do more research on this issue, do more readings and knowledge yourself about how the economics work in your country, i.e. how the whole corporation system in American NEEDS a large number of cheap underpaid labors that no legal American citizen would want to do. Please educate yourself lf the muli-sides/issues stem from a capitalistic society (and one as rich and big like the US). Since you seems to have such a “strong opinion” about it, it’s better if you know what’s really the REAL issue before screaming too loud. Nothing is simple as black and white.
And I suppose you are privy to this knowledge to be lecturing me on what I should be studying? Please give me your discertation on why these “Big Corporations NEEDS a large number of cheap underpaid labors that no legal American citizen would want to do”. You sound like you seem to have quite a big chip on your shoulder to be exclaiming to me what you feel is the true ill of American society (and what I need to do before stating my own opinion on this matter). Perhaps you must be an Economist or a professor of a prestigious university teaching Socio-Economics. I’m very curious. Please inform me O Master Guru of American Capitalism. As you say: “Nothing is simple as black and white.”
I don’t seem to grasp what your feelings lay in this issue. Perhaps you may be siding with the “poor immigrant laborer” who infiltrates into another country only to be “picked on” by those evil and cruel “corporations”.
Bottom line; anyone comes into another country illegally has no rights in that country. It is f’n as black and white as it can possibly get. If you are a lawyer please find me some text that counters that statement and I will shut up.
Your statement of: “Umm….because right now American economy depends on those illegal immigrants?” is grossly misrepresenting America. You are the one who needs to do some studying. America’s economy depending on illegal immigrants. Phht. Perhaps I should go to Microsoft, Intel, Harley Davidson, Budweiser, etc. . . and ask them if they have any “illegal immigrants” working at their assembly lines (by your logic)?
You know, Da Kappa, I find your denying that illegal immigrants are being used for underpaid and exploitative labor in the US kind of – stupid. It’s a proven fact already. What do you think you’re trying to do by trying to disprove it?
I understand you’re a really patriotic (and most likely, white, Christian, male, and far-right-wing) American, and that you’re probably a really big fan (or fanatic) of capitalism and American democracy and all that. However, like all fanatics, you fail to see the many flaws of these systems you appear to be so proud of. Yes, Americans are using illegal immigrants for veritable slave labor. The immigrants can’t complain to the police, because if they do, they know they’ll be found out and deported. Their “owners” know this too. I don’t suppose you’ve heard of the immigrants working as house servants being kept permanently in their masters’ houses? (They’re not allowed to leave, which also helps keep their status as illegals from being discovered.) No, of course you haven’t. People like you will ignore any information that doesn’t agree with their opinions.
Really, don’t you think it’s kind of mean-spirited (not to mention hypocritical) to profit of the labor of illegals behind your back, and then proclaim to the world how you want them to get out of your country?
LOL, I also liked your “someone who enters a country illegally has no rights in that country.” Are you trying to say that these people can just be killed (a denial of the right to life) without the killer being accused of murder?
And I especially liked your “ask Microsoft , Intel, etc.” Why don’t you ask them? Really, do you think that a country can prosper on highly-skilled labor alone? What about janitors, garbage collectors, and house help? This applies especially to so-called “First World” countries like yours, because everyone there is lazy, accustomed to the good life, and unwilling to get their hands dirty. Do you really want to do factory or construction labor? No? Thought so. So shut up already and stop complaining about the immigrants.
Not to mention, the populations of developed countries are dropping because for some reason, people there don’t want to have children. Do you really think that America can still be as prosperous as now when everyone, or even just a majority of the population, is past retirement age? You say you don’t want illegal immigrants, but you need them, if you want to keep up your wasteful, ostentatious, developed-country lifestyles – and of course you do. LOL. It really makes me laugh.
This Debito is starting to become the Al Sharpton of gainjin. Can someone knock him off already and save everyone the annoyance factor?
I agree with this poster. I am an English teacher that lives in Oizumi. I have a right to be here. I have been here for three years. I have a valid visa. Every day I see tonnes of spanish and portuguese illegals who take jobs from Japanese people. They don’t deserve to be here. They fight and are rude to Japanese people. They don’t respect Japanese customs. They give all gaijin a bad name.
I very much doubt that they are “portuguese” or “spanish”. Brazilians and spanish speaking South Americans i can believe.
I used to live in Oizumi, possibly doing the same job APXmusic is doing now. The majority of the foreigners there are Brazilians / Peruvians of Japanese descent, and I think that many of them are there on legit visas (if you can prove Japanese ancestry, I believe there is a visa for that). There was an immigration boom during Japan’s economic bubble that brought lots of South Americans with Japanese “blood” to the town to work in the Sanyo factory, and they’ve since managed to bring family members and so on, creating their own segregated culture within the town. There were a lot of loud and rude Brazilians in the town, but there were also a lot of loud and rude Japanese out there. Also, the shitty menial jobs at the factories in Oizumi/Ota are the kind of jobs most Japanese people do not want to do, so I wouldn’t say they are “stealing” jobs.
Foreigners aren’t stealing jobs from the Japanese. They are filling the job positions that Japanese people are refusing to fill. The situation here is much different than that in the US, but even there the idea of hordes of illegals invading the US is on the retarded side.
The spectre of “Illegal Immigration” is silly and pre-manafactured 150 years ago by racist idealogues in various governments. Nice to see the Japanese catching up to the rest of the advanced world.
My thoughts exactly.
I think the only problem with this poster is it might promote discrimination and racism against gaikokujin who ARE legal, promoting residence to think that anyone who is foreign, is there for, illegal. Though, I’ll give people the benefit of the doubt, to actually have an open mind that not all ‘foreigners’ in japan are illegal. But not everyone, will think this way…
Having 6 police in riot gear on 1 individual, if illegal, is a bit overly extreme to portray the problems of ‘illegal immigration’.
There are sufficient concerns about labor shortages in Japan due to the aging population that companies are extending the retirement age or abolishing the age of mandatory retirement altogether yet people believe the low-paying crappy jobs illegal immigrants hold are putting Japanese out of work?
The poster is clearly designed to sensationalize the threat presented by foreigners in Japan and will likely lead to harassment of all foreigners in the area as it encourages locals to see them as a threat and report them to the police for annoying but likely innocuous behavior.
The attitude among foreign residents in Japan that only gaijin are noisy and ignore Japanese customs is curious. My Japanese neighbors are 10 times noisier than me on all fronts from standing on their balconies after midnight and having loud, boisterous, drunken conversations to getting up at 8:00 am and running loud equipment to look after their two square yards of “lawn”. The Japanese frequently break their own rules when it suits them but no one comes down on them for being obnoxious or violating etiquette and custom.
Debito may be extreme but he’s provides a service as a one-stop shop for evidence that the Japanese are behaving in overtly racist fashion. He creates awareness and may have an effect on curbing the more egregious racist behavior. If you don’t like what he does, don’t read it but it serves a better purpose than playing the good gaijin and hoping the Japanese will pat you on the head and approve of you.
It is a simple case of natives believing that it is their God given right to bark in their own back yard, but outsiders (to which ALL Foreigners are) do not have any rights to do the same. To be fair, the same can be said anywhere else in the world. Outsiders will always be looked at as outsiders (gaijins) regardless of where you or I live. If you do not blend with where you live you stand out. If you stand out you will not be accepted by everyone in that society regardless of what you do (or lack thereof).
Ever notice that immigrants to the US, Japan, and Europe are expected to “assimilate” into their new host country’s culture, but whites and Japanese who go to live in developing countries aren’t? Many of them do learn the customs and language of the country they’re going to, but if they do, it’s thought of as them doing something extra, and optional. Not as a requirement. Wonder why that could be? Why the double standard?
Oh, and don’t say some racist nonsense like “only people from developing countries emigrate to developed countries, not vice-versa.” That is patently false.
And don’t say some even more racist nonsense about how the culture of developed countries is better than that of developing countries, either. That, too, is patently false, since there isn’t even a universal standard for determining how “good” a culture is.
As is the case when I comment on something Shari says, I couldn’t agree more with this, so much so that I embarrassingly have nothing else to contribute now.
i think the japs police is too dress up to catch a illegal alien. isnt tht stupid?
Japanese abit too racist against the gaijin…
but some bad gaijin give a bad name to all…
Don’t you notice “mizugiwa”?
People can enter Japan very easilly by boat.
It is impossible to protect Japan’s border without the help by the residents including you.
Illegal immigrants from other countries flooding into Japan are not the problem. Japanese people who hire those illegal migrants just because they are cheap labor is the true problem. Without jobs they wouldn’t struggle to go to Japan in the first place now would they? For the rest of the “Non-Japanese” who struggled to legitimately live and work in Japan are not only getting descriminated; but it’s also giving the general public in Japan xenophobia against all foreigners (yet again).
attention illegal immigrants! stay at home or face the consequences!
Please call 1-800-DENOUNCE, thank you for your cooperation
The issue is about people illegally entering Japan not about foreigners legally staying in Japan. It’s not like a poor Mexican illegally crossing the border to take a housekeeping job in the U.S., either. Illegally entering Japan usually involves organized criminal groups. It’s the issue about human trafficking.
Japan should crackdown human trafficking as fiercely as she can. People illegally enter the country are most likely engaged in illegal activities, since they are heavily indebted to their smugglers, who are mostly gangsters, and have to repay huge debts. You can’t repay it by simply taking menial jobs. It’s a slavery, in which a victim is also a perpetrator. The Japanese government was once accused by the State Department of the U.S. for not doing enough to crackdown human trafficking of Filipinos, Russians and South Americans by Japanese yakuza. While I doubt that trafficking of those people is as common as the U.S. claims, that of Chinese and Koreans by Chinese, Korean and Japanese organized criminals is widespread. So, I think that the Japanese government has every reason to take this issue very seriously.
In addition, there are agents who sneak into Japan for sabotage. Don’t forget the fact that North Korean agents infiltrated the nation from the sea and abducted Japanese citizens with the help of Chosen Soren (Chongryon, the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan). You have to remember that we are geographically uncomfortably close to rogue nations across the sea and our enemy organizations are operating freely in Japan.
What you don’t understand from a “foreigners” point of view it is one in the same. The treatment that the community has as a whole towards foreigners in Japan will become more of xenophobia because of the propagation of illegal immigrants. Japanese citizens can’t tell the difference between an illegal 外人(Gaijin); just simply a 外人. The only difference that Japanese society can really distinguish the difference is a 外国登録証明書(Gaikoku Toroku Shoumeisho: The highly prized Foreigner Registration Card). Any foreigner living in Japan regards that card more important than his/her own passport while living in Japan. What do you expect all foreigners to do; wear their card on a neck strap to prove they are legitimate foreigners in Japan (to escape any lewd or rude expressions)?
I should say that Ibaraki is one of places where foreign people come to illigally….I’m from ibaraki and I’ve met couple of people who hadn’t had any Gaikoku toroku shuomeisho….Even north koreans!!
Anyway visiting other coutries is fun but people should be legal visitors or whatever the legal status to show respect toward other countries….
Ok, it’s against illegal aliens. What’s the big deal?
I wish police in Europe would do that!
