Japan Photo of the Week: Harajuku Girls
Not too long ago Gwen Stafani released a song called Harajuku Girls which is kind of a ballad to those stylish girls of Harajuku, a district of Tokyo. Harajuku is typically known for the “stylish” girls that roam the streets there and the shops that sell the style. On one street there are all the designer label shops lined up next to each other and on a street parallel to that (and actually all in the surrounding area), there are more affordable shops all trying to sell the latest fashion. So basically in Harajuku, there are all kinds of styles floating around from the Prada touting to the secondhand clothes wearing and literally everything in between…and then of course, we have the style that Japanese refer to as “lolita.”
You can sometimes find these girls (and guys) wondering around Harajuku, but the best time to go is on Sundays when a lot of them (and photographers) gather just next to Harajuku Station. If you want to take a photo with them, most of the time they are more than willing to pose with curious foreigner, just ask them.
