Japan Photo of the Week: Itsukushima Shrine

June 2nd, 2007 by Evan

I told you that Miyajima was my favorite of the “big 3,” and because it is my favorite, it is worthy of another photo. This time, we have Itsukushima Shrine which is famous for the floating tori gate in the sea. Actually though, it isn’t always floating! When the tide goes out, you can walk right up next to the famous gate and even touch it if you want. Itsukushima Shrine is really nice as it has the ocean, mountains and the city of Hiroshima in the background.

A traditional dance is performed at Itsukushima Shrine in Miyajima. Photography by Evan Pike.

When I visited the island of Miyajima and Itsukushima Shrine, I was lucky enough to be there at the same time as a wedding. After the wedding, set to the background of one of the most iconic scenes of Japan (the tori gate), I was able to watch this traditional dance performed in honor of the new married couple. For more photos of the (sometimes) floating tori gate at Itsukushima Shrine, check out the Japan Photo Guide.
