A North Korean Dog Meat Restaurant

In this interesting clip, a Japanese reporter visits a North Korea restaurant in China that specializes in high quality dog meat:

Before visiting the restaurant the film crew also visits a North Korean souvenir shop in Bangkok, which was selling a variety of goods from herbal viagra called “Youngeron” to Da Vinci works copied by North Korea’s finest artists.

They then head for Northern China, where a North Korean restaurant has recently opened. The restaurant specializes in dog meat dishes, and the reporter orders their most famous item: dog meat galpi in a sauce with vegetables. It’s tender and not too bad. The shot of the menu reveals the prices for dishes to be around 25 to 35 yuan (about 3 to 5 US Dollars), which isn’t so bad…..for North Korean dog meat.

What broadcaster was that from? I loved the fact they kepy in the top right corner some splash graphics of ‘The Dear Leader’ throughout the segment looking like a deer in headlights…

As for the dog meat, its strange to westerners but to be honest I’d try it if I had a chance. I really can’t say its ok to kill a cow versus a dog because its still the death of an animal. So if I eat one, I’d give the other a try before I comment on it.

Let me know when any North Korean dog meat shops open in Japan.

I can’t lie and say that this doesn’t totally disgust me.

I know it’s a cultural thing, and I’m not expecting them to stop, but I sure would never enter a restaurant that served dog.

And Alex, to me, there’s a world of difference between cows and dogs.

Seriously, people whats the big deal. I have been to a great (North) Korean restaurant in Beijing, great food, including the dog meat. But I heard that strange Japanese guys eat RAW fish! like … RAW!

Dog meat is only a problem if the dogs were tortured, but nobody cares about the cows and pigs.

Please note that I said I don’t expect anyone to stop eating anything. I merely said that -I- find it disgusting. And I find it to be that way because any animal that I would accept as a part of my family (dogs and cats) is an animal that I could not fathom eating.

I would never accept a cow, pig, whale or fish as a part of my family, so I have no issue eating them. And the way an animal is prepared has nothing to do with it, so I don’t understand why people keep bringing up RAW fish or whales. I don’t care if it’s raw, fully cooked, or still moving while you’re eating it.

So….your opinion is just based on your prejudice, not any objective thought about the issue. I’m a vegetarian, but I would never pass judgment on what others do with their diet. It’s a difficult position to defend to say that one type of animal is ok to slaughter, but another type isn’t. I have a dog that I consider part of my family, but that wouldn’t stop me from trying dog meat (though not making it part of my diet). This whole argument seems to boil down to ignorance, opinion and sensationalization.

I’m not seeing any argument. Where did I argue that others should do anything other than what they want? Where did I argue that another human being should change any sort of thinking or habit? I simply stated twice now, that I don’t care what others do, and that It’s simply something that I could not imagine doing myself.

You’re right in the fact that it’s my opinion. I still have the right to that, I’m fairly sure. I fail to see any ignorance on my part, as I can fully understand that a dog is merely jut another animal to other people. It is however not just another animal to me. It’s an animal I have strong feelings for and that I have no desire to eat.

And if it’s sensational for me to state my opinion in the form of a comment on a blog post that piqued my interest, then so be it.

There’s nothing wrong with stating an opinion if it contributes to the discussion. Passing judgment on other’s diets by saying that it’s “disgusting” and that you couldn’t “fathom eating it” is sure to invite criticism. I thought that was what you were seeking, a counterpoint. I have eaten dig meat before and even cats, rabbit, kangaroo, croc, wild bush pig and rats. The fact is they all meat, so it’s OK to eat dolphins, whales, cows and ducks and it’s not OK to eat Dog?

And also, dogs are not endangered animal, but whale is. So who’s more crule Japanese or Korean?

Well there is a BIG difference between chicken, cows, pig and… DOGS/CATS:

the dog/cats are meat eater, while the others arent. so that is also the reason
that dogmeat for sure has a strange taste compared to the other meat.

Squids/octopuses eat meat, so do most fishes, pigs and chicken eat everything they get between their teeth/in their beak.
And now guess which animals were fed with meat and bone meal.

What if we think squid is gross? Can we then say we wouldn’t eat a dog?

This is just a cultural thing, Tadashi, I don’t think anyone above was saying it was wrong in an absolute sense, just that they wouldn’t be able to eat it because of their own experience.

I remember the first time I ate horse. I almost cried until I realized how good it was.

Dog is delicious when you’re starving to death.

It’s delicious when you want a late night snack.

iv eatern dog meat soup in cambodia and the philippines its ok. but iv jus left thailand and i never knew about a norTH korean souviner shop in BKK.

this is what is sick.In south korea and china .Dogs and cats are boiled alive.They are thown into boiling pots and you can hear the screams they are also hung by there tails and necks .Then they are blow torched to get rid of the fur.It is beleieved that the the more pain inflicted the better the juice comes to the surface.There are videos on it that were taken in a undercover watch.If this is what you call ok Then you are all sickos.Dont start the culture excuse either because thats a poor excuse.This practice of doing this to animals only gets your country boycotted .Good job.
