Here’s an incredible story from a Japanese TV program about Fumihiro Mitsuyama (Tak Kyong-Hyong), a Korean in the Japanese Imperial Army who died as a kamikaze pilot in the final days of the Pacific War. Prior to his death, Mitsuyama had become had become like a son to Tome Torihama, the woman who operated a small restaurant near the Kamikaze airfield in Chiran, Kagoshima Prefecture. This program is about Torihama and her daughter’s attempts to locate Mitsuyama’s family and tell them the story of the 24-year-old Korean singing Arirang before he flew away to give up his life:

Those who are interested in Mitsuyama’s story might want to rent the 2001 movie Hotaru, which is partially based on his life and death. A character based on Mitsuyama also makes an appearance in the new kamikaze film For Those We Love, which is adapted from a book by Tokyo governor Shintaro Ishihara.
