TV Champion: Foreign Otaku Competition (Airs Tonight!)

Turn yout televisions to TV Tokyo (channel 12) tonight at 8:00PM, folks: TV Champion will be holding a competition to crown the king of foreign otaku in Japan! Here’s a teaser:

I’ll try to record it and post some highlights tomorrow, but those of you in Japan with TV’s should not miss out on this great chance of feeling embarassed and shamed at the weirdness of some of your fellow foreigners!

Looks awesome…few things are as amusing as pitting the socially awkward against each other in competition.

The white guy with the cap dancing in the video… he is an exchange student at the school I go to – Sophia University.
Like many white guys in Japan, he is prematurely balding so he shaves his head and often wears a hat to hide it. We call him “Cueball”, and I can attest that he is socially incompetent at school, awkwardly trying to make friends with Japanese guys by randomly spouting lines from old B&W Japanese movies in a loud voice, and constantly trying to pick up on Japanese girls. He got a part-time job at McDonalds to try and hit on the girls who go there. Apparently it didn’t work very well because he keeps a blog about his life here and is constantly whining that he is miserable and can’t get any sex. He is always alone.
My friend and I were eating at McDonalds and he suddenly came up to us and started bragging about how he was going to be competing on this show to be the biggest gaijin otaku in Japan, and how he was singing the lyrics to anime shows and such. We were completely stunned. If you were shameless enough to participate in something like that, why on earth would you go around telling people about it! People like him should hide away in a deep, dark hole in the ground somewhere.

The worst part about all this is at Sophia he is but one of many foreign students with freakish personalities that make one think of a psychology experiment gone horribly, horribly wrong.
I can’t wait to brush off the dirt from that school and go home.

man… jonathan is infamous all over japan apparently. my friend and i met him a few months ago and we definitely got the same impression of him. our japanese friend met him on mixi and he came out to watch them filming an amateur movie. he kept getting in the way of the camera and sticking bubble gum wrappers on his forehead for some reason. i think he’s some kind of savant though. his japanese is quite good…

I have met that guy from Sopia, and I’ve got to say that I agree with what Dubois had to say. In between disgusting belches, he walks around singing Dragon Ball Z theme songs out loud.

Dubois summed it up perfectly when he said “We were completely stunned.”

“Stunning” is the only way to accurately describe this guy, and for all the wrong reasons.

I don’t know this guy, but I have known someone like him. I shudder with the memories…the body odour…the speech…the obsessiveness about crap…. It is possible that laura might be not too far off by calling this guy a “savant” (idiot savant I presume): he sounds rather autistic in many ways, or perhaps severe Asperger’s Syndrome, aka the Otaku Syndrome.

Japan’s anime exports seem to be attracting entirely the wrong sort of fanatic. Maybe they should export right-wing ideology – see the uyoku clips. But then “Who Is The Most Right-Wing Gaijin in Japan?!?!?!” would be on TV pretty quickly though. That could be fun too….

Now I wish I got TV Tokyo out in my inaka prefecture. Checked the listings for tonight, and it’s not there. Oh well….

Can you guys be a wee bit Nicer… this guy obviously has some type of mental disorder/needs counsling, sure it says something about all gaijin on tv having to act “wacky” but it isn’t going to help him in his life.

It isn’t that hard to pick on the retarded kids. Can we please resume instead insulting the alpha dogs of the gaijin world – investment bankers and David Spector.
