That reminds me of a Japanese TV show that introduced imported products from East Asia; they found a pack of dried mango ;the package reads:kawaita man* in katakana without a voiced consonant mark.

I often drove past that very sign when I lived in Gunma. It’s on a barely used road between Maebashi and The Middle-of-Nowhere (which is not too far away). That road will save you a lot of time when driving between said locations.

Technically though, it’s not a town. It’s a street or a sub-division of… I think Miyagi Village? Classic, nonetheless.

Some great names on that list. I love Eromanga and Sukebeningen…. Reminds me of the time a Japanese TV show went to some north European country and in the phone book they found someone called “Anna Aho”…..

A few months ago I found a Japanese site with other funny place names (both domestic and foreign place names that sound funny to Japanese speakers). Hanageishi is on there, and also Gero. Slightly surprised it is actually apparently read hanageishi. Far too logical for such a weird placename. That said, my long-standing favourite is the spa resort town of Vomit, I mean Gero (下呂温泉). Okay, 字が違う but it’s still fun to say.
