Golden Week: Japanese flock to South Korea for affordable plastic surgery

May 5th, 2007 by James

According to an Agence France Presse report earlier this week, many Japanese were planning to spend their Golden Week holiday in South Korea getting plastic surgery:

Seoul – It’s not everyone’s idea of a holiday, but some South Korean clinics are cashing in as Japanese use their Golden Week break for cosmetic surgery overseas.

The long holiday gives patients a chance to let facial swellings shrink before they have to return to work, and prices in Seoul are said to be half those charged for similar treatments in Japan.

Ana Clinic in southern Seoul told AFP it had appointments with about 40 Japanese during the Golden Week, compared to the weekly average of 20 from that country.

Theme Dermatologist clinic has some 30 Japanese patients this week, five to six times higher than average, according to Segye Ilbo newspaper.

Double-eyelid surgery and nose jobs are among the most popular treatments for foreign clients, and face-lifts and skin-whitening are also in demand.

Getting double-eyelid surgery might seem fun and cheap for Japanese women who hate having “small” non-western-looking eyes, but things can go horribly wrong sometimes, as this TV news report shows:

The Korean woman in the video with botched double-eyelid surgery has one eye that opens much more than the other, and one of her eyelids cannot entirely close. Quite a horror story, but rare cases such as the one shown are hardly enough to convince many customers not to get the procedure….

Did that say 1 out of every 2 women in Korea over 18 has had plastic surgery?!?! Is there any way to do a fact check on that, that seems way too to be realistic.

Peter Pan,
I think half women are a little exaggerated but cosmetic surgery seems spreading over Korea as the president and his staff members undergo the operation.

Most of those who visit Korea from Japan for cosmetic surgery would be Korean-Japanese taking various circumstances into consideration.
I wonder if British media know Japan better than French media.

Following is a funny story that a boy imitated Koreans, Japanese and half-blood between both in a Taiwanese TV program.

Funnier is that Korea objected to Taiwan about it.

It’s hardly the first time Japanese citizens have gone abroad for medical treatment:

I’m not sure what’s going on with her mouth that they keep showing.

I do feel pretty bad for her though.

Japan has a much higher plastic surgery rate then Korea does. Not to mention the thousands of Japanese who visit Korea in order to get surgery. So i find it funny that Japan of all places accuses Koreans of plastic surgery. You also mention that Joji had plastic surgery to look more Japanese. Mind providing any evidence for this other then a single site that doesnt seem to have much credibility. Its hard enough to distinguish Koreans from Japanese other then height.

Ken whats ironic about that Taiwanese show you presented was that they made fun of Japanese eyes as well. Slanted downwards. You mention that Korea protested even though 99.999% of Koreans have never seen a Taiwanese show in their life.

I think pretty much every country has a high plastic surgery rate, but how do you know Japan’s is that much higher than Korea’s? There has been an upsurge in Korea recently, no? (I’m pretty sure I read this somewhere, but tell me if I’m wrong.)

Having lived in Seoul for several years, I’m skeptical of that statistic, too. Double eyelid surgery is common but not that common.

I think maybe this issue is just another thing for people to get angry at each other over.

“Korean women have more surgery!”
“No way! Japanese women have more surgery!”
“Well, Japanese men are more handsome!”
“Never heard of the Korean Wave, pal? Bae Yong Joon for the win!!”
“He’s a wimp! Japan has samurai!”
“Samurai are from Korea!”
“Don’t be stupid! They originated 800 years ago! Samurai are Japanese!”
“YEAH? Well? Japanese are Korean!”
“Takeshima!”
“Tokdo!”
“DIE!”
“YOU DIE FIRST!”

Kaching, POW!, KerspLAT!&$#, $#&*+!,

ad infinitum
