A mind-numbing clip from last night’s “Okusama ha Gaikokujin,” in which the Japanese hosts attempt to teach a group of foreign wives how to loudly slurp noodles in the polite Japanese way:

Imagine a show like this in the west, My Wife is a Foreigner! Ok ladies today we’ll see if you can eat buffalo wings like an American!!

Comparison to America is pointless. America doesn’t have the homogeneity of Japan.

But on the point of slurping. It is very difficult, I’ve found from personal experience, to teach foreigners how to slurp politely. You know, we’re not just slurping for the sake of making noise. It’s actually much more asthetically pleasing and delicious to eat noodles properly than without slurping.

Aesthetically pleasing? Really? Is it the way a good powerful slurpy suck can really shale those droplets of soup all over the place? But hey, why stop at noodles? I think we should slurp everything. Next time I’m in Starbucks, I’ll make a point of slurping my double flat white as loudly as possible. Ah, traditions…. And we should teach those Eye-tallians how to eat spaghetti as well. Now I’m going to go watch Tampopo for some tips….

You have to teach someone how to slurp/suck noodles. I didn’t know that some people can’t do it.

As for the other comment, I don’t think it makes the noodles better or anything. It’s just easier to eat that way.

Well seeing that she’s Croatian (i saw the flag) I can only tell you that in our country slurping food is considered INCREDIBLY IMPOLITE. If a person would do this while eating in Croatia, they would be served with “death glares”, it would be unbarable. So that’s why she was restraining herself so much, it’s just the way she was brought up.
