You can expect the story to gain even more attention--the killer mailed a "multimedia manifesto" (not my words-that's straight from the news anchor's mouth) to NBC News between the first killings and the dorm/classroom killings. Chances are, the ramblings will spun like mad by the media.

Am I the only who's noticed the horrific bigoted inaccuracy with which Japanese TV has been covering the VT shootings?

The guy moved to the US when he was 8. A number of Japanese TV stations have called him an "exchange student" and every single news report on Japanese TV kept a banner up on screen letting everyone know that a Korean student had shot people.
He might have been a South Korean citizen, but almost all of his education and almost all of the parts of his life that he'd have been able to remember would have been in the last 15 of his 23 years, which were in the US.

Furthermore, he was an English major, which Japanese TV kept reporting as "英語," English language, instead of "文学," Literature, which would be almost infinitely closer to the truth. English as a language is almost never even a major at US universities. Calling him an English language major is not only completely inaccurate, it reinforces the image of him as South Korean as opposed to a long-term American resident, which plays into the whole "Koreans are aggressive" stereotype.

On an odd, but less grievous point, a few different channels translated "Senior" as "3年生" - 3rd year student. Baffling. In neither Japan nor the US would a Senior, a student in his final year, be a third year except in rather unusual circumstances, in which case "3年生" would still be an inaccurate translation.

Just to irk me even more, they kept cutting away from remarks by the Police Chief and Senior VP for University Relations to interview Japanese exchange students who hadn't even seen the shootings and didn't know the shooter. How many times do we need to hear, in both Japanese and English, that Blacksburg is normally a quiet town?

Another fantastic fumble.

"200 ethnic Koreans face evacuation from Utoro,"

As I have heard it, it was originally the dispute among ethnic Koreans.
I might be wrong. I wish someone wrote on the case of Utoro in English, clarifying what was the real issue.
