New Mos Burger hits stores! (Video)

With McDonald’s Japan making huge amounts of money from popular burgers such as the Mega Mac, their “rival” in Japan, Mos Burger, has decided to fight back by totally refurbishing their signature Mos Burger. After conducting vigorous taste research, they decided to drop 100% beef patties and go for a mixture of beef and pork, which they claim makes a burger better suited for Japanese tastes. Here’s a hype-filled TV report on the “Shin Mos Burger:”

The report mentions a major reason why McDonald’s is kicking Mos Burger’s ass: Mos Burger’s burgers are expensive. People might think their freshly prepared burgers and taste slightly better than McDonald’s burgers, but a single tiny Mos Burger is three times the price of a cheeseburger and McDonald’s and almost the price of a Big Mac. To combat this problem Mos Burger is planning to give out discount coupons for the first time in the history of their chain. But wiill a 50 yen discount on a 300 yen cowpork Mos Burger be enough to give Mos Burger the edge in Japan’s fast food war?

The only Mos Burger nearby closed down a few years ago so I can’t try their new burgers. However, I always thought their food was better than McDonald’s (but I’ve always disliked McDonald’s food) and would have continued to occasionally have it if the place hadn’t gone under.

I think the economic slump does in places like Mos Burger. Though the economy is improving, people probably got into the habit of seeking cheaper fast food and have forgotten to go back to Mos Burger or developed a taste for McDonald’s or other very cheap food they had when they felt an economic pinch.

I’ve tended to look at Mos Burger as a bit more of a novelty. They may go out of their way to make their food a little more fancy-schmancy than Lotteria and McDonald’s, but like you said, they cost far more. People are voting with their yen, and they’re choosing the cheaper alternative. If they want to get back business, Mos Burger needs to revamp its prices, not its menu.

isn’t most ground meat a mix of beef and pork? funny how the guy talks about the japanese tongue; can sombody put a translation of what he was saying? has mcdonald’s always used 100% beef or was that to make it more lean?

I think he said something about it being closer to the taste of “hamburg” than a hamburger, and since “hamburg” is very popular in Japan, it might be more fitting for the Japanese tongue.

McDonald’s has been 100% beef for as long as I can remember. Here it’s 100% Australian beef, rather than 100% American beef.

Goddamnit I miss Japan. And MOS Burger…

Whatever changes they might try, I honestly believe there’s only room for one “McDonald’s” in any given country. Not everyone can be number one thanks to rock bottom prices and even lower quality. I hope MOS Burger finds a balance and continues to succeed without fretting over catching up to McD’s.

Japan’s already suffering from a reproduction crisis; they can’t risk adding “increased rates of strokes” to their growing list of concerns.

It’s ironic in a way: they talk about how the beef-pork mix is more familiar, more “homely”, but that’s not sue to any deep Japanese tradition, unless it’s the long tradition of buying cheap meat. Any visit to a supermarket will confirm that beef-pork mince is a darn sight cheaper than the all-beef stuff. So Mos are about to lose an edge: the ‘luxury’ (common to all burgers) of being ‘pure [high-class] beef’. This could backfire in a big way.

That said, Mos are pretty much the only burgers I eat when I eat burgers, which is not very often, as they are expensive. But damned good. Fresh-made, and actually look like their photos. A Spicy Mosburger is easily better than the refried roadkill places like McDonalds serve. They should knock off about 50 yen permanently, and hype the fact that their ‘basic’ Mosburger is a lot more than a McDonalds’s basic burger (the thickness of the tomato alone is about that of a standard McD burger). [Mos do have a bare-bones burger as well, but it's not popular.]

I tried it yesterday. Well, I don’t go often to Mos Burger, way too low energy/price ratio for a poor little student like me. And to be honest I wasn’t blown away by the taste. Cannot really tell the difference between the old and new version, but their burgers taste like that crappy japanese hambaagaa you can buy at cheap cafeterias. Perhaps it’s too real, I like junk better :)
So they won’t beat McDo, their chance is to serve these elite burgers for people who care about quality. (But anyway man, if you care about quality why eat burgers? Burgers are meant to be junk!)
