Court ruling: K-Pop singer Ivy’s music video plagiarized Final Fantasy (Video)

April 10th, 2007 by James

According to the JoongAng Daily, a South Korean court ruled on April 6th that the music video for pop singer Ivy’s “Temptation of Sonata” had illegally copied a scene from Japanese game company Square-Enix’s “Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children.” Below is a video showing Ivy’s video and the scene from Final Fantasy side-by-side:

And a video made by a Korean gaming site that splices the two videos together to make a single music video:

The court ordered that the video be banned from airing on television. However, copies remain on sites like YouTube, where diehard Ivy fans and angry commenters are engaging in insult-slinging battles as this is being posted…

the fact she was willing to sample classical music and turn it into such a horrible song makes it seem she doesn’t have much respect for art

Ivy side excused in the press for apology that the plaigiary was committed by a Chinese composer during arrangement process as if “Blame on the Chinese.”.
Shame on whom?

There seems a post in a Korean blog, “These are not plagiary in Korean law. But it would be better to consider global opinion before long.”.
Should we be pleased or upset?

They gotta realise that there’s a certain limit to parody before it crosses the line into plagiarism.

The article text was a little unclear: the copied scene is from a movie, not a game. The full title of the movie is “Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children”.

While the plagiarism was distasteful, I have to say that the live action rendition of that fight scene was pretty impressive from a visual/effects standpoint.

So the Koreans are having trouble finding new ideas huh? Well doesn’t that suck…haha. They seem to love to steal Japanese stuff even though they revile the Japanese nation.

Back to the topic…song is terrible…jus a LITTLE obvious that its a rip…and if she did blame it on some chinese guy…isnt that typical? lol

LOL. Koreans have run out of creativity? They love to steal japanese stuff? Its sooooo incredibly sad that its almost funny when people see a music-video and use it to jump to such ridiculous, far-reaching conclusions about a whole group. I mean, do you even realize how you sound? Somehow ignorance seems to thrive on the internet. Now THAT sucks.

But anyways, back on topic. I’m glad they called her out for plagirizing. Plagarizing shouldn’t be condoned or encouraged; its harmful for both parties.

Why, may I ask, are you interoggating the entire Korean nation for “running out of creativity” when it was only one singer’s mistake? You cannot possibly be insulting Koreans as a whole for this single person’s doings.

Well, that was repetitive, as is the song. I, however, enjoy the music video. I simply am displeased with Ivy’s choice to illegally create it.

Do they really need to go to court to say it was plagiarism? You have to watch it once to know it was not original.

Please, why are they making such a big deal out of it?
It wasn’t made to mock, nor was it a reference.

For God’s sake, it’s Advent Children! Will Square Enix just cool it?
It’s not like the world’s going to end if a single Korean singer acts out a scene from the movie.

Making a big deal out of it? These people were making a profit by copying someone else’s work, so taking them to court for their obvious act of plagiarism would hardly count as an over-reaction in my book. Ignoring it would only be a sign that others can freely copy their products.

the music was terrible. I want to go back to Korean and slap anyone that I see listening and liking this “music.” Not only that but the MV was a horrible representation of what was the song even said (lyrics were nothing deeper than an imprint of a needle in sand).

other than that, I’m not a sensitive person but if you would like to comment on the music video, please to not use a general term such as “Koreans” but rather IVY or whatever else you are testifying. As for the defense of Koreans, it is not only Koreans who slaughter great original classics…

wow.. you guys are all pathetic,
first off, we’re not the ones that go around saying “it’s called the SEA OF JAPAN!” even though you all know its really the sea of korea… so who’s the one stealing other countries stuff now, hm?
and seriously, i never knew how desperate you guys were for money that you guys would sue one singer remaking a scene in a game.

“even though you all know its really the sea of korea”

lol…good try troll, I don’t think even the Korean’s argue that, since it’s sea of depending on the countries perspective. they only bitch that maps take the Japanese perspective (or whichever European called it first) instead of a neutral one.

now, to see if anyone’s going to take the bait..

wow. the music video was probably the most obviously plagiarized thing I have ever seen. singing covers of another artist is already toeing a fine line, but this is just ridiculous.

oh man, that made me laugh pretty hard..
i didn’t like the song, and if i want to see that scene i can just watch advent children.
some artists are pretty repetitive and there are a lot of music videos that look the same, but this is a blatant copy.
