Eichi Shuppan Publishing Co. bites the dust

From the inside, looking in has just reported that Eichi Shuppan, the company that published the infamous Gaijin Hanzai Ura File, has gone under:

Eichi Shuppan has closed its doors and is being liquidated. It had oustanding debts of JPY2.3B (about $20 million give or take). I’m sure people like Debito and JapanProbe will be celebrating, although the failure of the business is unrelated to the recent fuss over racist publications, and is rather due to the fact that its parent company has closed its doors and Eichi was one of the subsidiaries which was already in trouble and could not stand on its own two feet….

Oh well, that’s what happens when most of what your company publishes is crap.

Whether or not the disgrace occasioned by Gaijin Hanzai Ura File was a factor in the subsidiary’s demise, it is possible to see in the extremist nature of said mook an agonizing grasp for public attention, the final throes of a band of ill-educated hacks who colluded with low-level authorities to spike their inbred inanity.

  You can’t really attribute this to “capitalism” without disregarding a million cases that would prove the contrary: namely, capitalism causing crap to thrive while quashing quality. I would cite, for one, the general state of journalism in the United States, which is a painful embarrassment to anyone who feels the slightest nostalgia for quaint notions such as “democracy,” “integrity,” “public responsibility,” “the fifth estate,” etc.
  
  “Capitalism” in the press is, for example, Bill O’Reilly shouting down a guest while waving his finger threateningly and calling the guest a “kook” and a “moron,” all the while gleefully confounding Bush administration policy goals with “the American people.”

Hate breeds hate. So I wouldn’t be too surprised that they will crawl from their termite holes sometime in the future and start up another s$*@ when something goes down (involving a foreigner in Japan). Till then gotta stay vigilant.
