When cherry blossom viewing goes bad (Video)

April 3rd, 2007 by James

Here’s a clip from a news program that aired yesterday:

The report is about cherry blossom viewing parties in Tokyo parks, and shows the less pleasant side of such festivities:

  • People passed out from drinking in the park
  • Huge piles of garbage
  • Drunk dudes who think it’s fun to jump into the piles of garbage
  • Police breaking up a fight between loud drunks

If you’re wondering what would be considered appropriate behavior for cherry blossom viewing parties, this month’s JapanZine has an article entitled “Hanami Manners 101.” You might be shocked to find out that singing karaoke and pissing on cherry trees are not proper “sakura etiquette.”
