An employee at a recycle shop in Saitama Prefecture’s Kawagoe city made an amazing discovery yesterday: 3.8 million yen (about 32,000 US dollars) in cash sitting inside of a cardboard box that had been dumped in a junk heap next to the shop. Instead of recycling the money, the employee contacted the police, who are now searching for the owner of the money. Similary stories of accidentally throwing away huge sums of cash seem to pop up at least once a month in the national news. I guess one of the pitfalls of a society that relies so much on cash payments is that folks are occasionally going to misplace thousands of dollars. Banks might not pay interest on your money here, but it’s still a hell of a lot safer to keep your money in one, folks!
