Dog meat video posted by Japanese YouTuber enrages Koreans and draws mainstream media coverage (Video)

According to the Marmot’s Hole a major South Korean newspaper has run a story about “It’s Fact ! Koreans eat dog meat and cat meat,” a YouTube video uploaded by a Japanese netizen. The video, filmed by an American activist, shows instances of horrible animal cruelty, and the newspaper notes that it depicts Koreans as savages who eat dogs.・ Here is the video (WARNING: VERY GRAPHIC):

At the time of this posting, the video had over 645 comments, most of it vicious and ugly insult-slinging between Japanese and Korean netizens. The YouTube commenting war between morons in Korea and Japan rages on….

Having studied the history of Korea, I wonder if this if eating dogs and cats are part of the culture due to the amount of wars and famine in the country over the last 500 years. Though I don’t like the idea, I accept it. The problem I have is if they are doing these things humanly. That’s were the itch should be I think.

The reason why eating dog is such a big culture shock is becasue most western love the dog like family. And some of them are even having sex with dogs…

No matter how you feel about the role of dogs and cats in our world, if you can watch the cruelty shown in this video, and not feel that this is wrong, there is probably something wrong with you, by any cultural standards.

I am sorry for my silly comment above. I wasn’t serious enough.
Personally, eating dog itself bothers me but I know it is more cultural issue. I don’t know how long dog has been a pet to Human. Maybe in Korean culture, dog is not completly treated as a pet yet. I personally believe having animal as a pet itself is wrong. I believe dog or any other animal are never happy as long as they are pet simply because there is no freedom.
Anyway, it is a digusting video that I regretted to watch .

So dogs are slaughtered for food in South Korea. The unhygienic conditions are a worry, as would be the theft of people’s pets, but animals are stunned and bled as a method of slaughter throughout the world.

The video also focuses on things that are beside the point – a bucket of internal organs. Is this something that makes killing dogs worse?

He shows the same shop – both where he saw the meat and where the dogs were caged – and keeps saying “here’s another one.”

Even if everyone eats dog every day in every town in South Korea, why is that any worse than eating pork or beef?

I can see an argument against whaling, but I can’t see any reason why it would be OK to eat cows, pigs, and sheep, but not dogs or cats.

I agree with you: if you think its ok to eat cows, pigs, and chickens, eating dogs and cats shouldn’t be a major problem. However, I believe some of the posters at Marmot also mentioned that some Koreans believe that making the dogs terrified before beating them to death somehow makes their meat taste better (somewhat similar to the Japanese who say that terrifying dolphins before slaughtering them makes their meat better). Such cruel methods of killing animals aren’t exactly cool in my book.

Fully, absolutely agreed. Eating animals is one thing, torturing them is another. While I’m not as diligent as I probably should be, I avoid live-boiled lobster, calamari, etc.

this reminds me of Killer Whales torturing seals by tossing it out of the water… That REALLY strikes fear into the seals… I wonder if that makes their meat taste better.

What you all fail to realize is that the CONSUMPTION of the meat isn’t the problem. It’s the CRUELTY involved in the slaughter. I for one couldn’t care less who eats what, as long as the animal is killed humanely. I’m not saying the Koreans are savages, they aren’t, but there is something very wrong with the way they slaughter these animals. Did you see them slamming the rabbits against the ground?

“But it happens all over the world blah blah blah….” Indeed it does, but just because it happens all over the world that doesn’t give Korea a pass. That kind of slaughtering is just plain unethical no matter where it happens Korea is no exception.

I agree, my issue is only with the fact that the narrator points out, “these are dogs, definitely dogs,” but doesn’t seem to have a problem with the rabbit being killed other than the cruelty of the method. He clearly had a problem with the very fact that dogs and cats were being killed.

He may be a vegan or a fruitarian for all I know, but it seems that a lot of people who are disgusted by the consumption of dog have no problem with the consumption of beef. Cows are killed in essentially the same way: stunned and bled. So are pigs and sheep. Fish are left to suffocate.

I agree that what is done to other animals doesn’t mitigate what is done to dogs, but I think it is abundantly clear that the narrator’s objection was largely fueled by the idea that the dogs were then being eaten, as though that made it worse.

You must realize first how cruelly animals are slaughtered daily in US.
Just watch some factory farm video like those from undercover tv
before you criticize korean cruelty.

What you all fail to realize is the stereotyping. Don’t say that Koreans slam rabbits down against the ground. Say it was the Korean person. Not everyone does that. Generalizations are what cause racism. I am Korean and I agree 100% with you on the cruelty involved in the slaughter. This is the sickest thing I have seen since the video about illegal fur. People, stop stereotyping Koreans… there are a lot of other people that eat weird things.

OK, i’m NOT going to see that video. Dogs and cats just aren’t for eating as far as i’m concerned. Yes, i know it’s hypocritical, seeing as i eat pretty much every other type of meat (human excluded of course), but i just can’t change my “quaint” western views of cats and dogs in a day.

Pig seems more intelectual than cat as casted in a movie.

something like this was mentioned in a uk mag called ‘bizzare’ about 10 years ago. as at that point, i didnt know much about asia, but i felt cringed when the mag stated the dog’s are hung upside down and beatern with sticks while alive, to make the meat taste better. something about the adrenaline which makes the meat taste better.

but i never saw this when i was backpacking in Korea. maybe not speaking korean would help, but i have seen plenty of this in Cambodia. yes, iv tried dog meat in cambodia. the menu said misalanious meats [sorry, dyslexic, and no dictionary in a net cafe] but i was ill with the shits for 5 days. it looks like beef, but not taste.

i like to try anything once [apart from fat or blubber] so i tasted dog again in with a filipino head hunter tribe. it was very good.

the hardest thing iv seen was 2 dogs heads with its eyes sewn shut, and lips burnt off in a Lao market, and a little terrier dog, all sliced up laid out like a jig-saw puzzle in Sapa, N.Vietnam. now thats cruel, but i expect that as they have done this for 100′s of years, but i dont really expect this in a civalized country like Korea.

dog’s in asia are more of a street dog varaity than a loving pet back home that you take for walks and keep it fit

I understand Korean’s hatred toward Japanese… It seems to me one of main reason why Korean desire to show Japan’s dark side to the rest of the world is because Japanese don’t admit the history… I think the hatred of Korean is far more in magnitude than those of Japanese.

Most Japanese just react to the hatred of Korean.

In history, Japan was an evil country to its neighborm specially to Korea. The ancestor of current naive Japanese did so many evil things to Korean.
And current Korean keep the history in their deep heart by their ancestor while most of current Japanese were fogetton purposely by their ancestors.

Sometimes, it remind a movie Planet Escape where old apes hided the fact that their culture are from human, which are treated as animal. And archaeologist ape found their civilazation is from Human.What is more irony is that most non-japanese believes Japanese culture and civilization are from Korea… I know lots of people may have problem with my comments. But who knows? manybe our whole human civilization is from Ape long ago, who used to be Alien

That’s a cultural thing, probably related to the famine of the old times.
In Japan they cut tortoise’s neck and let all the blood out of the body while hanging them. In the states, they steam alive lobsters. Those are just a couple of examples. If you don’t like it, I think it’s great to protest and try to change it, but this video is completely ridiculous. And also, I must say, not graphic at all.

Really, we only have the luxury of being able to argue about this because none of us have to slaughter and butcher our own meat. Anyone who has ever eaten ANY chicken has no right to say anything about any inhumane method with which dogs or cats (or dolphins) are slaughtered, given the awful conditions in which chickens are raised and killed. Honestly, if most of us were put in charge of acquiring our own food from start to finish, many of us would starve to death because we’re so squirmy about the idea of slaughtering or butchering animals– and we’re completely inept when it comes to growing crops. But whether you call it “humane” or not, the fact is that you are still KILLING the animal and eating it. If you have a problem with it, become a vegetarian and stop wearing leather and cosmetics.

If they just presented their point of view in a rational, straightforward manner, people might listen to them. Would you please show me a source to back up your statement? Or do you joke on the Iki-fishermen in this way?
I was born and raised near a fishing village on the coast of 宇和海、愛媛県。I know how fishermen fear 海のたたり. They are highly superstitious and very keen on doing the right thing in the right way. Instant kill is the must. Even in case of dolphin killings fishermen would prefer instant kill if there are such methods available.
In some cases fishermen don’t even let women touch their catches because some fishermen believe female’s hands are somewhat warmer than male’ hands.
I would appreciate it very much if you answer my question above.

While the fishermen might try to kill the dolphins quickly when the slaughter actually begins, I was referring to the reported practice of driving the dolphins into a cove, sealing them off and leaving them overnight before beginning the slaughter. I read somewhere that leaving them overnight allows enough time for the dolphins’ fear to expend a considerable amount of energy, making the dolphins easier to kill and possibly making the meat better. [Can't find the link] It’s not the same as boiling dogs and cats alive, but it still seems pretty inhumane.

I eat chicken, pork, and beef, all raised on pasture on real family farms in my community. I drive out to the farms and buy directly from the farmers, so I can see the animals foraging in their spacious living quarters months before they end up on my plate.

It’s not only humane but healthy to eat meat from animals that have been raised with care and killed in the least stressful manner. Some Purdue University agriculture professors published a study showing that animals that stressed either from neglect (lack of water, fresh air, space) or from abuse yielded inferior quality meat with a pH that was either too high or too low, depending on the kind of stress. Moreover, meat, eggs, and dairy from pasture-fed animals are very high in CLAs and have a healthy omega 3-6 ratio.

Given that dogs and cats are carnivores and our ancestors got their meat mainly from herbivores, I suspect that the nutritional profiles of cat and dog meat are not as favorable as those of pork, beef, chicken, turkey, and lamb although it depends on what the cats and dogs are fed. Tuna and salmon are so high in omega-3s because they eat smaller fish, who get their omega-3s from aquatic plants, and since tuna and salmon are fatty fish, their bodies store a lot of omega-3 fatty acids.

Isn ‘t that because some Korean people keep expressing the hatred after Japan’s apologies, and keep nitpicking the apologies and compensation and keep distorting history?

BTW in Japan there are morons who express the hatred like the comments in youtube, for sure, but in general, Japanese are unconcerned about Korea, but it seems for Korea the hatred education toward Japan is her national policy.

I have to say that the conditions of the animals are really bad, but to be angry that they kill cats or dogs for food is a bit hypocryt if you eat other meat.
Just because people have cats or dogs for pets doesn’t mean that it is any worse than killing cows or pigs.
Think of what a hindu would think of us killing all those cows for our happy meal?

Japanese people say a word prior to each meal just like a pray by Christian.
Japanese one’s original meaning is the pray and thankfulness to the lives including plants sacrificed to let the Japanese survive.
If your words are true, the way is against the Japanese spirit.
So I will blame the way too but to critisize others, the evidence is essential.

Y’all Please don’t use the western value judge our eastern culture, you people eat beef whereas in India that is a Holy animal!!!
Different culture can see certain animals in different ways,and as far as I know,those dogs for cuisine are factories raised like pigs(or else is illegal). If people raised dogs or dog lovers, I bet they won’t eat either. And for people who have a family recipe and has long been a family tradition, and pass on for generations, and has always place an important part in family meal, how dare just because some people from other culture(who has no clue or respect of our culture) condemn or even forbidden us to do so just because they don’t like it . .. And I bet the killing of cows don’t look nice either!

OMG, I watched a video last night & i wished I didn’t. I am so traumatized by it. I have never seen anything like that in my life. They threw poor dogs into boing water alive, hung them and I couldn’t watch anymore I was so in shock. How could anyone torture any animal like that.
It was one of the saddess things I saw. I cant get those awful images out of my mind. I hope they are working very hard to stop this awful, sadistic cruelty. And we may come from different cultures, but the way they torture the animals is horrible. There is nothing in culture about doing what they do to those poor animals.
It is plain sick. Skinning, boiling, hanging animals alive and any other torture is just plain wrong. Not all ppl eat meat and the ones that do dont torture the animals like that. I wish I never witnessed that. but i did & I plan to do whatever I can to be heard on this subject and stop the cruelty to these cats & dogs. Plus you dont see ppl kidnapping cows and chickens. But seriouly they are stealing peoples pets. And torturing them. That is just sick & mean. Culture or not. The bottom line is :IT IS CRUEL, SADISTIC & WRONG. And in most countries it is against the law to torture any animal the way that was on that video.
