Poll: 51% of Japanese smokers think they’ll get cancer, but most won’t quit smoking until they are seriously ill

March 22nd, 2007 by James

Smoking causes lung cancer, you say? Well, I won’t quit smoking until it’s already too late:

More than half of Japanese smokers feel they may develop lung cancer someday but say they will not kick the habit unless they do contract a grave illness, according to a recent Johnson & Johnson KK survey….

…Among the smokers, 51% said they think they could develop lung cancer someday. Asked what would cause them to give up the habit, 54.2% said developing a serious illness, while 11.2% said they will never be able to do so irrespective of what may happen in their life.

I often wonder if an aging generation of smoking / heavy-drinking salarymen going to drive down Japan’s life expectancy in the future….
