The Rise and Fall of Bloomers (Video)

This clip from a Japanese TV show takes a nostalgic look back at athletic bloomers, the panty-like bottoms that Japanese high school girls used to wear during gym class. Of course, the segment is narrated by a cute talking bloomer-thing:

According to the video, bloomers originally came from the west as knee-length athletic shorts for girls. After the Tokyo Olympic women’s volleyball team wore much shorter bloomers, Japanese schools adopted the short version for use in their pysical education programs. However,schools turned away from bloomers in the 1990’s after the media went wild over burusera shops that would sell used schoolgirl bloomers and uniforms to perverts. All of the high school girls interviewed in the video say that their schools do not make girls wear bloomers: the beloved bloomer has faded away…
