The cherry blossoms have finally arrived in Tokyo, kind of. Cherry trees at the Yasukuni Shrine have a few blooming buds on their branches, which is serious news in Japan:

JAPAN’S weather officials pronounced Tokyo’s cherry trees officially in bloom on today, days after they were forced to apologise for errors in this year’s blossom forecasts.

The official blossoming – based on examination of a single tree in central Tokyo – came eight days earlier than average, a spokesman at the Meteorological Agency said.

Television showed crowds of people gazing up at the pale pink flowers silhouetted against blue skies at Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo.

Here is just such a TV report:

Get out your blue tarps and beer, folks. Starting next week the trees are going to be in full bloom and thousands of people will be getting drunk while enjoying the beauty of the sakura!
