Chinese Politician wants national “Humiliation Day” for Japanese invasion’s anniversary

March 18th, 2007 by James

Some news from the People’s Republic of China:

BEIJING (AP) — A lawmaker has called for a national “Humiliation Day” on Sept. 18 to mark the start of Japan’s 1931 invasion and remind the Chinese public of foreign attacks, state media reported Thursday.

Chinese nationalism, especially among the young, has surged recently along with the country’s economy and international influence, stoked by a Communist government that regards Japan as its rival for regional superpower status.

“An outstanding nation is one that will always keep its history firmly in mind. We should never forget our compatriots who lost their lives in the war,” lawmaker Jiang Jian said during China’s annual legislative session, according to Xinhua News Agency.

“Remembering this humiliating part of history will help Chinese people feel urged to safeguard peace and work hard for the rejuvenation of the nation,” said Jiang, president of a hospital in Qufu, Shandong province.

[...]

The communist government keeps alive memories of the “Mukden Incident” through state media and schoolbooks and uses the date to rally nationalism. It was designated “National Defense Education Day” in 2000, opening the way for formal commemorations.

Jiang said governments offices should mark Sept. 18 by flying the national flag at half mast, arranging for air-raid sirens to blast for three minutes and for the public in stand in silence for one minute.

She also said government offices should not hold celebrations on that day.

A politician exploiting emotionally-charged historical events to play the nationalist card and gain popularity? Why, I’ve never heard of such a thing!

It will if people would associate themselves to something more than their national heritage (eg. citizens of humanity). I’m chinese by heritage but my ideals are best reflected by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Hahahahaha, this is retarded dude
Should Europe have a day remembering how the black death came from China? Or should US hold a day remembering how Chinese and Chinese-Americans conduct epsionage against the US?

Maybe they should have a day remembering 9/18 but please remember 6/4 too~~

I’m really starting to think that these Japan-China posts are starting to get very … biased in a way
Not to say that what is reported here is false in any way but just reporting the “Japan side” of the argument will mislead many people. For ex, there are many articles of Anti-Japan hate in China but is there no Anti-China hate in Japan?? Of course there is! If this blog was truly about everything Japan with no political motives then why not include articles about anti-China in Japan? You people are just leading people to believe one side of everything. I think that this blog should either include both sides of it or mention neither.

Perhaps this is because Japanese attitudes to China are more clear: they did, after all, invade and kill millions there. No one tries to deny that (save the lunatic fringe, but then there are also people who think the Earth is flat). In other words, we all know that, historically, Japan has been not the best neighbour, but China isn’t entirely lily-white either.

“The content of this site does not necessarily reflect our personal opinions.”
“We are not on the payroll of any political organizations, nor do we have some secret political agenda.”
By what they’re posting here, I doubt their statements.

This post simply quotes a neutral news article. You’re free to make up your own mind about it – if it sounds absolutely ridiculous it’s because it is. The only “bias” included in the post is the last one sentence comment by James.
