Yeah, that’s a joke – his accent when speaking English is inconsistent and with grammar and fluency that could, it would be odd if his pronunciation weren’t better, especially at only 34 years old.

When he says “konnichi ha”, the foreigner shines through.
ponta
lol His English—grammer, pronounciation etc., — is much better than me.

His accent is quite bad… And very fake.

Yes, it sounds downright German at times.

Yeah, I agree with Alex… sounds more Middle Eastern at times.

Oh come on guys, give the poor Mr. Tanaka a break. Maybe his Japanese parents spoke English in a German/Middle Eastern/Japanese accent at all times, so he picked that up as his first language. Let’s help him find his parents!
http://surrealu.blogspot.ocm claytonian
James is right. After all, he does convey a lot of Japanese heart if nothing else.
http://www.keepingpaceinjapan.com Turner
Nothing else.

Why is he looking for his parents?
http://surrealu.blogspot.ocm claytonian
well, wouldn’t you want to know your parents if you were an orphan?
Interestingly, Mr. Tanaka just subscribed to my youtube channel.
the overthinker
He does a better “Japanese Speaking English” accent than I do, but his Japanese accent isn’t what you would expect for someone brought up there, unless Shimane has some really weird hougen. He’s taking the piss out of the current Angeline Jolie adopt-a-baby-from-each-continent thing, and together with his observations on how a lot of Japanese do tend to speak English, it’s pretty good. Could get old fast though – haven’t seen the second video yet….
the overthinker
PS: The second video was funny when he showed us the phone book of Jonathan Smiths (where did he get an LA phone book in Shimane? Or was this not filmed there?) and talked about how many there were, but when calling it reminded me a bit of Borat.
CKX
When he pronounces names(Jonathan Smith) it’s not as ‘japanese’ as his other english.

His mannerisims and voice are a straight rip off of Masa Oki’s character on the US TV show hereos….
I think
http://surrealu.blogspot.ocm claytonian
You’re right. Masa Oki can’t speak in a good Japanese accent either.

We really are overthinking this
WujouMao
its fake, his accent reminds me alot of Manuel from the british comedy series ‘fawlty towers’, and the actor could speak proper english.
at the speed he is talking, he is easy to understand, even with a dodgy accent. maybe something big will happen on april 1st
WujouMao
jus an update on the video it didnt register as im tired, but the name smith. its comman as muck, so jus watching the 1st few moments of part 2 video, it has to be fake. its like looking for a needle in a haystack with the name smith. come on guys, he’s playing with us

yes it is fake. I saw his other channel, he is a comedian. He is American. But don’t you think he’s funny? On his other youtube channel (on which he deleted all of the videos) he shows the ken tanaka videos and shows that it is a comedy show. He has also been on tv, which was in one of his deleted vids.
http://surrealu.blogspot.com claytonian
thats cool info. Can you link to the channel?
I think he is quite funny, and am planning on posting a couple more of his vids.
Well, to go more in depth. This guy, if he’s faking, has quite an elaborate hoax. For one thing, his Japanese is very good- albeit flambouant. He has, in fact, atleast BEEN in Japan, as there is video of him by another user on Youtube: Tokyocooney. Keven Cooney met Tanaka in Tokyo in one of his videos. Cooney has lived in Tokyo for 6 years (view his numerous videos to verify that he is a “local”). Kevin Cooney, however, IS a comedian. Despite this, if this is a hoax, Tanaka maintained it while he was in Tokyo. (Many of his LA videos are in July… Tokyocooney videos is the following august). Here is the link to that video:
I think Ken’s pseudo Japanese accent is decent, however, he must want us to believe he has been raised in an all female family and went to all girl schools his whole life in Japan because his accent is that of a Japanese girl.
He should also remember the vowel sounds after the end of most words. If a word doesn’t end with the “N” sound in Japanese then it ends with a vowel sound, and most Japanese English speakers with an accent like Ken’s continue to hook the vowel sound to the end of their English words.
I do love his “Speak Japanese without saying a word” lessons on youtube.
