UK comedians Adam and Joe work in a Japanese host bar for an evening. With little success.

I haven’t had the pleasure of wasting my money in a hostess bar as of yet, but I am tempted to go at some point, just for the experience. I wonder if there is a call for foreigners to work in male hostess bars? Say what you want about pleasures of the flesh, but I think these Japanese establishments would probably be more relaxing than their international counterparts

There is quite a bit of demand actually for gaijin to work in host bars. In Shibuya, there are many many places that focus on specializing on gaijin hosts.

I was approached and given a leaflet to apply. I never did because I think its a fine job if your 16… (Not 28, like me). But yes, there is I would say substantial demand.

Hey, I’m kind of just browsing around the internet looking for information on this industry in general. Would having a moderate amount of conversational Japanese be sufficient to be considered for employment in a host bar or are they expecting applicants to be more or less fluent? I’m still somewhat in the ‘initial excitement’ about the idea of obtaining this kind of position but if there really is, as you say, genuine opportunities for foreigners (I’m a White American, myself) to do this I’m hoping to give it a shot the next time I visit my friends who teach English in Japan.

has anyone seen The Great Happiness Space? it’s a documentary about a host bar. the top earners get so much money a month, insane.

i am also interested in the host game. am a white aussie with limited japanese. do you need good japanese to be a gaijin host?

As far as I know, Gaijin Hosts are few and far between. Being a host is a fairly thankless job by most accounts. You might as well become a NOVA teacher, it’s pretty damn similar. However if you’re very good looking, you might be able to become a host. You might also consider signing up with a modeling agency in Japan.
