Comic Strip Humor

If you’re an English teacher in Japan that is looking for a quick and easy lesson, why not ask your students to caption some comic strips? Here are some of the best results of a recent experiment using some of the “Your students write the joke” print-outs from Learninglaffs.com:

    The math problem

Most of the students wrote something like “The answer is wrong,” or “The answer is 2.” But some students actually went for humor:

    You so crazy.

How dare this teacher try to infringe on this student’s constitutional right! Somebody call the Japanese equivalent of the ACLU!!

    Big bags

Valetine’s Day is coming up, and this student must have been thinking about all the chocolates he would be getting from his female admirers.

Uh oh…we’ve got a terrrist on our hands!

Cow and student sitting at desks

The most common response to this comic involved a beef/steak joke like the one above. However, there were a few interesting responses from students who misunderstood the context of the picture:

Perhaps this student thought they were in a movie theater?

I suppose one could think those aren’t desks. The boy’s legs do kind of look like wheels….[I had to type in the words because the student had very faint pencil-writing.]

And finally, my absolute favorite of all the comics:

“I want you to die by your own hand.” How wonderful!
