Blonde haired blue-eyed news

This story may have blipped on your radar. Basically, a school was looking for an English teacher, and only a stereotypical foreigner would do. Today, it was actually on the news, much to my suprise. I was with my girlfriend’s family. They all laughed and said how stupid the request was. The news, and the reaction by native Japanese, made me hopeful for the future.

I just saw this on TV today. And was wondering if anyone had blogged about it. Pretty dumb thing to say isn’t it?… but at least this school is honest. A lot of them don’t say it out loud but if you can probe their minds, its probably the same thing.

I think that’s a problem on their ends rather than on Japanese people

My friend experienced this first hand because she doesn’t look like the ‘typical’ gaijin. She is of Taiwanese origin, but grew up on Canada and speaks English better than I do. But she was told she could not work for a school because:

‘our students will expect someone who is Western-looking’

Canada is in the West ya know. Apparently she has gotten this by numerous other people, even in Canada. I suppose having the poster put up is better than someone saying it to your face.

The school is brain washing kids into to thing that all cacusain speaks English well.There is many cases that a cacusain is born in an asian country and speaks only asian languages. If a my child want to see foreigners, i will take them to airport or where the foreigner hangs out. Hell i tell them to watch TV. I would not want my kid to attend a school that would rather focuses on excellent english language then hiring a cacusain to amuse kids just by their physical appearances.
