Polling Japanese Students #12: Study time vs. TV time

Welcome to the the 12th installment of Polling Japanese Students, the series of posts in which I post the results of surveys I gave to Japanese junior high school students. This time I decided to ask second year junior high school students how many hours a day they usually study, and how many hours a day they watch TV. Here are the results:

Question 1: About how much do you study every day?

Question 2: About how much TV do you watch every day?[This poll was conducted a day later, with the same students plus a few more..]

Since they are still second year students, they are not quite at the point where they should begin studying for high school entrace exams. I imagine that a similar poll given to students in December of their third year would yield much higher values for study times and much less TV watching time. I guess I should also mention that 2nd year students spend a great deal of their “free” time participating in sports and club activities. It’s no unusual for some of the sports teams to have practices almost every day, including days during vacation periods. I was expecting much higher study numbers, but I guess the factors I mentioned above may have had a significant effect on reducing the actual amount of time they would be willing to invest in studying. I wonder if 14-year-old students in other countries would give similar answers. [If I was answering survey questions back in my junior high school days, I would probably would have answered "30 minutes or less" for my daily study time.]

As always, I am looking for new questions to ask the kids and I am open to your suggestions. Please post some in the comments!
