Milk + Beer = Bilk

January 31st, 2007 by James

If cholocate beer isn’t good enough for you, how about milk beer?

NAKASHIBETSU, Hokkaido — A brewery here has succeeded in producing a low-malt beer with milk, after the drink was suggested as a product that would help use up surplus milk.

The drink, called “Bilk” will go on sale on Feb. 1. It reportedly has a fruity flavor that its brewers hope will be popular among women.

The idea for the drink was conceived after dairy firms threw out a huge amount of surplus milk in March last year. The son of the manager of a liquor store in Nakashibetsu, whose main industry is dairy farming, suggested the idea of producing the milk beer to local brewery Abashiri Beer.

[...]

Since one-third of the drink is milk, the drink has been viewed as a good way to use up milk in the town. The drink got the thumbs-up from 30-year-old resident Kaori Takahashi, who took part in a tasting session.

“It’s got a fruity taste, so it will probably go well with sweets as well,” she said.

Each 330 ml bottle costs 380 yen. For the time being sales will be restricted to Nakashibetsu, with six liquor stores selling the drink.

Any readers in Hokkaido want to buy a bottle and tell us how it is?

If you poke around that brewery’s website you’ll find the scallop beer they already have out. Yum!

Sounds unappealing at first, but Baileys is fine, and it’s made from milk.

Well, there are many mixed drinks made with milk that taste great. So I guess this one has a chance I think.

I once tried brewing some milk when I’d bought far too much.
Resulted in a rather potent soft cheese.
I guess if it was ale/stout and milk it’d be nice like a guinness milkshake but with some kind of lagerbeer… eugh!

I recently went to Japan for 3 weeks and got my hands on a 6 pack. Its a very light beer with a milk aftertaste. Its not so bad and would probably sell enough to compete in the NY area

My missus often puts orange juice in her milk. Not quite the same but it fills me with a bit more confidence in her culinary taste now. I suppose it tastes a little like a spider (coke + icecream)

The think that really bothers me is the problem of the milk surplus. Why do we always have to produce too much ?

Anyway, beer is healthier than milk ! :P
