Shinkansen service starts in China: passengers don't know the trains are Japanese? (Video)

January 29th, 2007 by James

High-speed trains modeled on JR’s Tohoku Shinkansen have made their debut in China, and the Japanese press was on hand to cover the line’s first official running:

The reporter asks passengers about their opinion of the train they are riding on, and most are surprised to find out that the train is Japanese! One passenger says she thought the train was German in origin. Is this a indication that the Chinese authorities were not so keen on promoting the idea of purchasing a Japanese train design?

When it’s as easy to buy tickets as it is in Japan I’ll be more impressed. Regarding the Japanese Origins thing, no real reason why it should be hyped, is there? While I’m sure the Chinese didn’t go out of their way to make the point, most people probably aren’t that interested. It’s a fast new train – great.

I’m not sure it really matters if the Chinese passengers know where the trains originated from. Its just being prideful on the Japanese side to care about this in my opinion.

Most of Chinese also don’t know how much of low-interest loans the Japanese have lent to China.

Now lets see them protest, riot, and light them on fire every time the PM goes to yasukuni.

When was the last time the Chinese rioted when the PM visited Yasukuni? 4/10/2005?

The Japanese raped Nanking and now they are raping China’s dignity by forcing them to ride Japanese trains.

History repeats itself.

Isn’t it just too sick to contemplate? Those long shiny Japanese phallic symbols sliding in and out of Nanking all day long….
Hmmm. But this time China invited them, so I guess it’s consensual….
