- A group of Liberal Democratic Party lawmakers critical of the government’s stand on Japan’s wartime exploitation of Asian women for sexual servitude plans to visit the United States this spring, the LDP lawmakers said Friday. The lawmakers said they will travel to the United States in anticipation of a likely move by U.S. lawmakers to introduce a draft resolution denouncing Japan for the act. [Link]
- The Miyazaki prefectural government on Friday started culling about 50,000 chickens raised on a farm in the city of Hyuga, a day after the highly virulent H5 variety of the bird flu virus was detected there. The local government later in the day decided to destroy another 50,000 birds in a farm adjacent to Sato Broiler Nojo farm that was hit by the latest outbreak, hoping to stem the spread of infection. - After more than a year of self-imposed exile, pop icon Michael Jackson is back in the United States and planning a trip soon to Japan – one of his “favourite places in the entire world” – he and his spokeswoman told The Associated Press on Friday. [Link]
- An estimated 7,334,000 foreign travelers visited Japan in 2006, topping the 7 million threshold for the first time, with arrivals from Asian countries marking strong increases, the government’s tourism promotion agency said Friday. [Link]
