Polling Japanese Students #10: Do you believe in ghosts? What about UFO’s? Have you seen one?

January 23rd, 2007 by James

Welcome to the the tenth installment of Polling Japanese Students, the series of posts in which I post the results of surveys I gave to Japanese junior high school students. At the suggestion of Tadashi, I decided to ask students about their views on the paranormal. First I asked them about UFO’s:

-

And then I asked them about ghosts:

-

UFO belief failed to gain a majority, but the numbers were reversed when it came to ghosts. Belief in ghosts was particularly strong among the girls in the classes I asked. As one would expect, few of the believers had actually seen a ghost or UFO. Those who saw UFO’s mostly claimed to have seen them out the window of their house at some point, or over their neighborhood. Those who saw ghosts had seen them in various places, such as Kamakura and a shrine near the school.

As always, I am looking for new questions to ask the kids and I am open to your suggestions. Please post some in the comments!

It seems that more knowledge doesn’t seem to reduce believes despite not having actual facts behind it.
Have you ever questioned about the sentimental need’s of the stundents. Of course the probable majority has a big need for a relashionship and the sentimental balance is only adquired by middle age but I still wonder if that need for a partner, special someone, whatever, ranks on the top priorities and if the results vary acording to the country.
