Six String Sonics (Video)
The Six String Sonics (SSS) are a Japanese band that has dropped the traditional six-stringed guitar in favor of individual band members playing one-stringed guitars. Here’s a video showing a little bit of their music:
The last song in the video is quite cool. Anybody seen them perform?

Being a guitarist I can attest to their claims of being limited but this is much more a performance art piece than music. The closing song is great though!
It’s not the standard rock band format that is limiting expression— it’s what most people do with the instruments they’re using.
This is a nice idea with potential, what they do with it (canned quasi-minimalist 4/4 artificial avant-garde) makes the instrument setup look like just a gimmick, because at this stage, it IS just a gimmick.
They talk about “music without limitations” and “freedom of expression”, but ignoring the gimmick, the music SOUNDS basically as limited—or more so—as standard pop fare.
Check out Captain Beefheart for the real thing—35 to 40 years ago—which happens to be in a “standard” rock band format.
Just my opinion, of course.
